I have been living in Germany most of my life and there are quite a few things I like here but I do miss the wide open spaces and the weather of the American Southwest where I have lived for a year.
Living now in Australia where there is a lot of wide open spaces and sunshine there are things too numerous too mention about what we miss about Germany and Europe in general.
I guess the same would apply for those in TX.

Indeed the quality of life. Miss also the following.....The professionalism how folk perform their individual task. The culture to do what is correct(and used to deride that) The intelligent discussions, diversity in opinion, great fresh markets and food, easy access to travel to other countries, great beer, great health system, not everything seemingly focused on young, better place to grow old,............Enough I could go on but you get the idea.

I love my quality of life here.
Yesterday, I drove to Passau. Today I drove from Passau to Linz, Austria and Cesky Krumlov, Czech and home.
It doesn't get much better than that for me.
Travel is my passion.

I never intended to be funny.

This thread is about what motivated people to live in Germany. Spending 3 days in Munich 5 years ago (and changing flights on German airports) do not qualify.

My first 3 days in the US were hell, but I don't base my opinion on these 3 days.

I moved her for love. It ended after 8 years but I have accepted Germany as my home. After my divorce, were it not for my daughter it would have been a hard choice to stay or go home. Some things I miss about San Diego- others not. It would be the same if I left Germany.

Getting used to a new country is not easy; the language took me about a year. In San Diego I had everything before my door as a sailing surfing climbing sort of outdoorsy person. Here I have to drive. On the other hand here I can go to the Atlantic, Med, and Alps... other lands, other cultures and all within a few hours of driving. In USA you can drive for a day and things don´t change that much.

It is a bit harder to make friends here- but really has not been that hard and when I was restoring our house on the Mosel I was amazed how, without my asking, my friends came along to help. I would have never finished without them, several took time and taught me how to do stuff I had never done before. In the US my friends would not have done what my German friends did.

28 day’s vacation and health care and such are not bad either.

If I had my choice there are other places I might consider living but really Germany is not a bad place to live.

I lived in Hanau for 3 years and Landstuhl (near Kaiserslautern) for 2 years. Hanau was my favorite though.

I ALSO base my opinion on the experiences of my Italian relatives who ALL returned to Italy after saving some money and ALL reported the same thing: everything functions well, but the Germans are cold. That's enough for me. Three days in Munich confirmed that and, if that's jolly Catholic Bavaria, then I can only imagine what the rest of the country would be like. I wasn't being funny, either. I have too much of a Mediterranean temperament to want to live in Nordic-Aryan Europe. They'd show me to the airport and buy me a one-way ticket!
