The difference is that European countries have distinctive cultures that have been forming for thousands of years. American culture is already a combination of all of those that have landed on its shores.. the US has always been multicultural, since it has been founded. Europe has not.
This was my experience. There are many great things about Europe, but in my experience tolerance for those who are different, particularly if they are Middle Eastern/north African and Muslim, is less than it is in the US. I heard things in the office on a daily basis that you'd be fired for here in an instant. I'm hard to offend, but that was put to the test nearly every day working in Europe.
Feel free to disagree, I don't really care. I'm not out to persuade anyone that I'm right. I'm just sharing my experiences of actually living in various European countries. Being able to speak the language(s) also helps.
From my experience Americans dislike muslims, and are always banging on about how Europe is doomed due to allowing so many muslims in. This to me does not appear tolerant, and it's ironic considering Americans say they live in the most multicultural nation on earth. Modern Europe is incredibly multicultural and tolerant of other races and traditions - there are entire neighbourhoods where ethnic people live and it sometimes feels like you're in another country - people are fine with it, people don't care, I would hate to live in a homogenous society that is intolerant.
The problem is that they view Islam as incompatible with Western civilization, since we in the West pride ourselves on tolerance, democratic ideas, and Islamic countries have neither tolerance nor democracy.
In my experience Europe is more racist, more sexist, and more homophobic than the US. By far.
Notable exceptions: Nordic countries were less sexist than other European nations. The Dutch were very, very tolerant of homosexuals.
I reckon you ate some danmed rotten mountain oyster in Amarilo.
