Hey everyone,
I am studying abroad in Montpellier right now for the semester; I really want to visit Paris while I am here, and my fiance will be joining me at the end of the semester after my finals. We want to visit all the main sights (Eiffel Tower, Louvre, Notre Dame, etc) so I was hoping someone could help recommend a hotel/hostel that sits in a convenient location for getting around the city (neither of us are used to big cities). I should also add that I am on a student budget so I am looking for a slightly more cheaper option if possible. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Paris is a very big city and realistically you will have to take the Metro (subway) between many of the sights you want to see. Consequently it may make sense for you to investigate hotels outside inner city Paris, since those hotels will generally be cheaper than those in more central locations. As long as you are reasonably close to a Metro or RER (commuter trains) stop you will be able to reach most of Paris pretty rapidly.

You might consider Le Village.

It is in Montmartre.
I stayed there some years ago and the breakfast was not that great, but the room and bath were spotless, the staff friendly, and the price was right. It is a hostel, but you can get a private room. If the breakfast does not appeal, you can always find a nice cafe down the street.

There's a hostel on Rue Mouffetard in the 5th district. I would suggest this. Lots of monuments in the 5th and 6th, great student/bourgeois/nighttime atmosphere but WAY less touristic than Montmartre.

You're probably talking about Young and Happy.

Le Village gets better reviews (especially with atmosphere and cleanliness) on Hostelworld, but I've never stayed at Young and Happy so can not judge it from personal experience. I know it's been around for years.

Yep, that's it!

I personally find Young and Happy to be much better-situated, though first-time tourists may want the Montmartre ambiance. My territory is the 5th, 6th and 7th districts. (however, the further away I get from my scholarly years the more I feel I'm getting just a bit old for the 5th)

Awesome, thanks everyone for your input, I really appreciate it . I will definitely look into all of those and see what will work best. I've noticed a lot of the hostels say they are near a metro line so that should be nice for getting around to all the attractions we want to see.

OOUF, transport! I didn't think of that as my favorite parts of Paris are all in the 5th, 6th and 7th (i.e., you could walk from Young and Happy). No place in Paris is far from public transport, though Young and Happy is close to line 7 and not so much to any of the "good" lines (12 or 4). That said, if you're out all day it doesn't matter too terribly much which line you're on. If you're bent on going out at night, though, you should definitely pick a general area you want to go out in as the métro lines close by midnight-thirty or one AM most days!
