America is America, the land of the brave and free!
I am going to go with England much more than Ireland in terms of culture. The foundation of America was laid by English people. However Irish-English sounds closer to the general American English in terms of accent.
Ireland tries to have a closer ties with the European Union.....while England tries to distinguish itself by preferring a "special" relationship with the European Union without following all the criteria instead and acting like a rebellious teenager (like how the US is when other countries criticize its global policies).
Hell, the Conservative Party is promising the public that it will hold a referendum if it should still stay with the European Union.
I think this is probably due to ROI's Socialist politics. They also want to disconnect themselves from the English as much as possible so joining the EU helps with that.

I live in England and a few people have mistaken my accent for Canadian/American. I don't know why.
Probably because most people in England are quite sheltered from other cultures outside of London and maybe Cambridge/Oxford/Reading.
Not at all... English are very introverted/keep to themselves. (and there are plenty of backwater towns in England too, i've been in some)
English people in larger towns & cities tend to be more introverted & keep to themselves, but not in more rural & smaller communities. Ireland is generally more religious than England, as is the US south. Some of the backwater places in Ireland are something else compared to England though & many parts seem about 30 years behind England...
Since the US is such a young country in terms of longevity compared to our European cousins, shouldn't this be what country is the US most like? The US is unique in terms of its culture. That is why we are called the "melting pot".
Since the largest ethnic group in the US is of German ancestry, why isn't Germany included in the discussion?
