Really? Could elaborate on the boldled? I've heard great things about the French and German health systems. Maybe we should have a thread comparing health systems.

the problem with the NHS is that it has virtually zero involvement from the private sector - there is often a shortage of staff on wards and in A&E.. and of course some people really hate it and switch to private insurance instead.. most affluent people would do that anyway.

personally, I've only had good experiences with the NHS, but know people who have had horror stories.

what "strain on services"!? More people = more taxes. As if everybody wants to bum off the U.K. system.

Are you being deliberately slow? It isn't as simple as more people, so raise taxes. An aging population will put a strain on services, and that will not change, regardless of how high taxes are. Look at Germany and Japan, the latter especially is not far from a demographic time bomb due to aging population and lack of migration inwards. The most likely outcome is people will just have to work longer.

Putting taxes higher will just make already disadvantaged pensioners even worse off, and would only be viable if you raised taxes for the wealthiest people who wouldn't notice 75% of their income being taken away. There are other problems related to an aging population too, such as lack of young skilled workers.

Nobody is talking about 'bumming' off the system. Moderator cut: Please, no name calling

The beauty of a hybrid system is that there's choice.

Maybe you should work on your reading skills.

Where did I say "raise" taxes or "higher" taxes? I said "more" taxes.. for the government. More taxpayers = more taxes for the government.

Should I assume you read and understood my post?

Let's assume you did.

So, are you saying immigrants come to the U.K. to bum off of the locals and/or the system ?

Please, not even Cameron would agree. Also, the Conservatives had their chance. Evidently, they are fine with the system that's in place. I think the moment has passed.

@ the person who left the rep comment..

Texas isn't the U.K. One can't just walk to the U.K.

The best NHS was Spain, hence we had Health tourism. All poor Europeans came here to be surgically intervened and for treatments they had to pay in their freezing countries - the payment was relayed to their EEC countries but the money got lost in paperwork and Spain lost billions due to Health Tourism. So now I believe that Health Tourism is over. Illegal immigrants - a few millions - do not have free coverage anymore except emergencies and births. So they come to be born here. Spain's Health Systems had more holes that the Medicare, not anymore.

Yes, immigrants collapse the system, not EEC members.

I do not mind immigration from Poles, other Northeastern and Eastern Europeans and just other Europeans (such as French, mainland Italians, Balkanites, Germans, Belenuxers and Scandinavians), Black Africans, East Asians which is good for examples but if it is Muslims (such as Turks, Levantines, Arabians, Iranians, Afghans or Pakistanis) and just other Brown/Olive Skinned people then it is a problem to me.

I actually laugh when Americans talk down the NHS. Pot, kettle, black?
