Kaliningrad (Koenigsberg) is the result of the ethnic cleansing of Germans by Russians, legalized by the post-WW2 accords as lawful retribution for the German aggression.

It was a predominantly German area from XIII century until 1945.

Now it's predominantly Russian.

I don't think there's any separatist feelings there, so the whole premise is rather pointless.

Default Problem with your statement

Spoken with acute and offensive Teutophobia, Gantz. I would focus more on American atrocities than 16th Century [German] ones. I think you would agree that the face of genocide has a human face, not a German one, unless you haven't learned a thing from history, which is a dangerous posture. The following stand guilty: United States, Russia, China, Israel (Hebrews in Canaan), Spain, Germany, Turkey, Cambodia, Serbia, Croatia, and Rwanda.

But I heard that most Russians living in Kaliningrad prefer to refer their capital as "Konigsberg" anyway!

Wouldn't it be good, if it could claim independence from Russia? It would greatly benefit the citizens of Kaliningrad. Kalinin would make a nice name for a country too. The economy is one of the best in any Russian Oblast, and it's the wealthiest per capita.

Why is this good? Greatly eliminates tension from leaving & entering Russia. (Aka Kaliningrad) and people traveling the Baltic states.
why do you want to separate countries?

Should Alaska claim indepedence? French Guina? The UK doesn't want to let Gibraltar go.
I guess when it comes to Russia we don't have a sh#t?

In all seriousness, Russia should use Kaliningrad as a special zone for reform.

Fight FF post is just a thinly veiled attempt at reasoning away Russia from a very important asset.

Kaliningrad is Russias tripwire. The EU (America/NATO) is an extremely aggressive power and if given a chance for profit in some form will not hesistate to destroy the lives of millions in order to gain. It's best a knife be kept close to its throat, just in case.

Kaliningrad is Russias knife on the neck of the beast. It serves as a window into Europe because they can keep a close eye on the EUs military doings and provide a very fast response to EU (American/NATO) aggression.

If you want it try to take it. There will be a cost.

Haha yeah right! See what happens if they try that. It will be Crimea on steroids and would probably give Russia an excuse to try to make a land grab for Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.

agree. Especially Europe, with so many tiny countries with a couple million people. Jesus. I wish all countries with fewer than 10 million people would be annexed by a culturally similar neighbour. The three nordic countries should just combine, and the three Baltic countries Denmark merge with Germany, Switzerland and Luxembourg with France/Germany etc etc.

Instead we have more and more tiny countries pretending they are proud indepedent countries. Really? If a country can't defend itself independent (not through some alliance), then it is not a country.

One might say, wait, those are different ethnic people with different cultures. Yes, right. This is probably why Switzerland is a poor mess today?

Europe needs another Napoleon. And UK please just mind your own business.

Coincidently, Kaliningrad is in the news at the mo, because satellite imagery suggests Russia is setting up a permanent base for it's Iskander nukes.

If anything Denmark should merge with the Scandinavian countries, they are more similar.

But I don't think that should happen. Scandinavian countries have the highest quality of life in the world. Why fix something that isn't broken? Smaller populations are easier to manage.

This is a very interesting theory. It would be believable if it weren't for the fact that there was some discussion after 1990/91 between Russia and Belarus to transfer the territory to Belarus so it would have a coastline. I imagine it's expensive to maintain a small territory that's disconnected from the homeland. But maybe they figured out that it could have tactical uses, as you say.
