OK, this is totally weird. I live in a Dutch city and my room faces North (I checked many maps and google so I'm sure about that). Yet, when I had all nighters recently doing assignments I've noticed the sun rises from north-east and sometimes even from north and not east like it's supposed to. Today I got very early and the sky on the left hand of me (overlooking north straight ahead) was starting to become lighter. I was like wtf the sun should rise from the east or north-east (which is on the right hand from my point of view). I see it now and it's still pretty up north, it's between north and north-east but nor completely north-east. Is this just a Dutch thing because back home in the Balkans I've never seen the sun rise from the north.

I can assure you that the sun does not rise from the north. It's soon solstice, so the sun rises in the Northeast in the Netherlands. At winter solstice it rises from the Southeast. It's because of the latitude (change in daylight) and the earth's axial tilt.
