Topic name - Varangians - is not Vikings . Varangians is Slavs. Urik also was not the Vikings. Russ is a Slavonic word name and comes from the rivers Russia. This article is not correct.Varangians is a Slavic Wends wars that were also good sailors and in their honor called Sea - Baltic Sea.
we learned that the Western Slavs were very close Ilmen Slovenia ("Novgorod"). This is shown by the materials of archeology, anthropology, linguistics, mythology, and data from a number of written sources. It is therefore understandable why the images of epic heroes Novgorod "Sadko" and "Basil Buslaeva" are connected with the sea, and the activities of the Novgorod ushkuyniki broadly similar to grocery Vikings.
Sea for Wendy Varangian was crucial, which is why the Baltic Sea at the time and was called Varangian Sea. Venda were great sailors, merchants. Thus, according to researchers at Janina W. and J. Herrmann, hoards of silver Arab coins in Slavic Europe appeared a century earlier than the first Scandinavian treasures. Hoards Wends from the late VIII century AD, and in the end of the IX century Scandinavia. It is clear that Wendy was monitored while the Baltic trade. They're the first to enter the path of the Viking Sea to the east (to the Arabs, the Persians and the Byzantine Empire) through Eastern Europe.
They, like their Eastern brothers-Slavs, had developed urban culture. According Vostochnofrankskoy table tribes (Bavarian Geographer), this source lists the IX century Slavic tribes on the eastern frontier the Frankish Empire, and the number of calls of their cities, the Wends were hundreds of castles, "Garden." For example: at the north-bodrichey obodritov (southern lived on the Danube in Belgrade) were 53 cities. Each city had its own ruler, Prince. In the tribe of clay, they were part of the union bodrichey was 9 cities. In lyutichey (Wiltz) were 95 cities and 4 area, apparently, is the territory of 4 tribes - Khizha, cherezpenyan, dolenchan, ratarey-retran. Gavelyane (or gevelly, stodoryane) had eight cities, the main thing was Branibor (modern Brandenburg). Sorbs-sorbitol, they lived in what is now the federal states of Brandenburg and Saxony, had 50 cities.
Another interesting fact is that the Hanseatic League - an alliance of German free cities in the XIII-XVII centuries in northern Europe, was created to protect the trade from pirates and the feudal lords, consisted mainly of the cities that were founded by Slavs. Among them Bremen, Berlin, Brandenburg, Königsberg, Stettin, Wendy, Lübeck-Ljubech Rostock and others had close ties with the Hansa and Novgorod. Hansa actually inherited trade Wends-Normans.

Just to clarify. The groups of people that I believe headed from the Pontic Steppes across Europe to Ireland did so long be fore the rise of the Slavs, Vikings, or perhaps even Celts.

They were a branch of the Scythian/Sarmation peoples who headed west in the Bronze age or maybe earlier. That is why we have red-haired people in southern Russia, and red-haired Ashkenazi Jews (who lived in Khazaria and picked up some genes). The fair, red-head existed long before the Vikings. In fact, Vikings seem to be more inclined to be blonde and tannable (Germanic) than red/ black-haired, milky white, and freckled, like the Irish, Scottish, or Udmurt people of Russia. The proto-Celtic type is a base genetic layer that arose 5-15 thousand years ago in the Pontic or S. Siberian / Ural region. Most N. Europeans have this genetic history, but in all except the far east and western fringes folks it has been diluted by mixing with Mediterranean and Germanic/Baltic influences, and perhaps some Mongolian influences as well. So, the Scottish/Irish to N. Causasus connection is very old. I am not sure what this means culturally, if anything.

I don't agree that N. Europeans were more developed than S. Europeans. Sure, they were more cold-adapted and hardy, but I think their weakness to alcoholism is a sign of less time to adapt to alcohol, not strength. And as far as mental capacity, it is pretty clear the the Mediterranean/Armenid peoples led the development of nearly all ancient civilizations. Ashkenazi Jews are the smartest people on earth, so they must have had some mental development. As did undoubtedly the Assyrians, Romans, Greeks, Phoenicians, Persians, Egyptians,etc.,etc. All northern peoples show a certain degree of intelligence that may harken back to the rigors of the Ice Ages, but the Mediterranean cultures had/have plenty of genius too.

"Varangians" is a Russian name for Vikings. Rurik indeed was a Viking ( or Scandinavian - whatever you want to call him.) So was Oleg - the first prince of Kiev.

I do think the Vikings had some history of establishing local and regional dominance, and even founding some cities and civilization. Vikings founded Dublin, Ireland too, for instance. However, such elites rarely change the gene pool very much, unless they arrive in mass. The genetic work seems to suggest that barring massive slaughter and immigration, the locals tend to show the "founder effect" of former mass movements or ancient populations. Again, I don't think the Russians got red hair from the Vikings, nor did the Scottish or Irish. They had it already.

Your dad was wrong, from the time of the Viking, even Norseman knew that Irish people had red hair! There are stories of it in their Norse sagas concerning the colonization of Iceland.

I think the Basque theory is somewhat discredited now in favor of all Europeans generally coming in waves from the southeast (Balkans/Middle East). I think the Irish probably came from Great Britain who in turn originally came over from what's now France and the Low Countries.

In more recent times Ireland has absorbed small numbers of people from Great Britain and Scandinavia as well.
