Ok, just an American passing through So I'll post my observations... Eurovision Phil P!!!
I was really impressed with Portuguese music! As far as originality (It didn't sound all the same), interesting chord progressions, and good vocalists. That was the country that grabbed me the most. It was interesting because I don't care for Spanish music that much because the singers always seem to overdramatic with matadorish rolling r's and such.
I loved how cheesy the power metal was from Finland. It was like Ronny James Dio on a Pokemon show fighting the ninth level dungeon boss. I liked the other music from Finland as well though. It was definitely different from Scandinavian music.
French music, at least from what I've heard sounds like the singer is disconnected from the instruments. Like he's vocalizing a poem and there's background music.
My favorite Italian singer was the weird one with the afro! Italian pop/rap seemed alot like Latin rap to me.
I guess Scotland doesn't have a monopoly on bagpipes, because here in the States if you here bagpipes, kilts and claymores are always attached. It must have been a common instrument way back when.
But I didn't here too much sad music, which I kinda like. Finnish and Irish were the only groups that really seemed to sound sad, but I can't understand all these lyrics that are foreign.
And some of these songs popular here in the US I had no idea were foreign!
this band could have been the french answer to Soft Machine and Frank Zappa, but I think you have to put the emphasis on "french" rather than on "soft machine" and "Frank Zappa":
Those guys were from my city but of algerian descent and were quite popular after starting in squats: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BRwpjFW82G8
this sont is actually a cover of a classic french song and has a double meaning
Unfortunately there was very little interesting hardcore in the 80s in France, especially compared to countries like Italy, but later we had a strong emo scene in the 90s:
escandinavia and germany produce some crapy music, Germany with their damn techno (cannot stand it), escandvinavia with its ace of base, real mc coy kind of music.
you also find some good music, mostly coming from the UK, spain, italy.
Yes, it is a really old style song, and also the video is quite strange -.-
But at least they have good voices, also when they sing in live performances.
They will probably also represent Italy during the next "Eurovision song contest".
