I've visited your neighbor countries of Austria and Italy. Slovenia is fairly close to so many other places in central and southern Europe, yet not very well known here in the USA. Does Slovenia have it's own language, or is it similar to the serbian and croatian languages? Am I correct to think that the cost of living in Slovenia much less than in Italy or Austria or other countries in Western Europe?

They have their own Slovene language. It's in the same group as Croatian and Serbian (South Slavic languages), but is rather distinctive. I mean, I as a Croat can understand a text written in Slovene but don’t exactly understand all when spoken.

Slovenia is the most developed of all former commie countries; not sure about the costs of living, but am pretty sure they are lower than in Italy, France, etc

Ljubljana is supposed to be a great city. Excellent symphony orchestra, if that's what you are interested in (I am).

Cost of living in Slovenia is much better than Austria and Italy. However renting an appt or home can prove difficcult at times because in thier commie past built few appts to rent. With the decline of the US dollar the tollar exchange rate is a bit painfull.
Basically, if yo live like a slovene (use public trans, shp at markets vice stores, eat local veggies and food in general) you will save $$.
My family, wife-3 children, lived in Slo 2 years and loved the place.

As a teen, we stayed at this place with the family:

Otoèec Castle Hotel - Otoèec Hotels - Terme Krka

It was a castle built in the 13th century converted into a hotel. It was after the death of Drug Tito, but before Yugo fell apart. We rented out the entire top floor (2 separate suites) which were furnished with true antique furnishings and objets d'art. There was of course the moat, and there were swans swimming around. Breathtaking location, a lifetime experience. I learned much with this stay.
