Sicilians look like sherpas from Nepal, the movie "the conquest of Himalaya" portraying the history of Hillary was filmed in Sicily. Their haplotype is Rt34, brought by ancient scites brought by strange vessels.

Maltese, for the most part, are Sicilian themselves.. most of their surnames and ancestry comes from western Sicily.

Most Maltese ancestry comes from Sicily's westernmost regions -- Caltanissetta, Palermo, and Agrigento.

I read an article on the history of the island and this is what I have gathered (as a summary), if it is of any interest to anyone:

1. Initially there were three groups on the island -- Sikels in the east who were an Italic tribe from mainland Italy, Sicanians in the center who are of unknown origin but possibly Iberian or proto-Berber, and Elymians in the west who were from Anatolia and possibly Armenian-like.

2. Phoenicians from Lebanon then settled the west coast, and Greeks settled the east and southern coasts. Elymians and Phoenicians merged, and then they along with the Greeks pushed the Sikels and Sicanians away from the coast and into the center of the island.

3. Carthage inherited Phoenician colonies, and expanded across the island to all but the eastern coast, which remained Greek. Following the Punic wars, and the defeat of Carthage, the Romans conquered the island but didn't settle en masse, and Greek became the predominant language and culture of the entire island.

4. Byzantine rule -- saw an influx of Greeks from both Greece and the Hellenized provinces of the Middle East (Greco-Syrians, for instance).

5. Moorish conquest that took all but the far eastern part of the island, and eventually they were expelled by the Normans, who settled mostly along the northwest coast.

6. French/Spanish/etc. rule.

7. Incorporation into the Italian Republic, in 1860 and has lasted to the modern day.

Ok, it's quite interesting this thread!
I am Sicilian, I have dark hair (the color is brown but they tend to have red highlights), nearly black eyes, my skin is very light but when I have tan it's color turn to olive not gold even if I have freckles. Usually when I am not in Sicily people think I am Spanish. I could have also albanian roots bc the city where my mother is from was an albanian founded city. My father has Arab features but green eyes. All the people I know looks very different, some of them you could bet they are egyptian, some others are blond with blue eyes. Some man are uglier than ever while some other are the best looking man in the world. Usually women average beauty is nearly high. But you cannot absolutely define the sicilian type.
