When I was a kid, I was taught that Europe ended in the Pyrinees...and that from the Pyrinees northwards it was a land packed with junkies, pornographers and decadent democracies controlled by a Jewish-Masonic-Marxist conspiracy.

I was taight that Spain was the only country in Europe, the "spiritual reserve", "an eternal unit in the universal spectrum", the only country not invaded by godless armies.

Irish were considered as brothers of Spain, as part of that specific Europe, so I guess that Ireland is Europe.

It's quite curious that all those hypernationalistic anti-European schemes were forgotten by all except by British.

Irish are not anti-Europe because their former allies, France, Spain, Italy and Germany, are on the continent.

Really? I have heard that as a "dicho" people say it but I though that idea came from the foreigner countries, it is said a lot nowadays by Latin Americans. I suppose I went to school a bit later anyway

We were not taught English. English was the language of "vice and sin", the language of "evil protestants". We were taught French.
I had to learn English by myself picking drunk English girls.
"The spirtual reserve of the west", and "Spain is an eternal unit in the universal", "the language of the empire", etc, etc...all that came from the founder of Falange, Primo de Rivera, Fascists.
But though the "Regimen" used all that words, they did not believe in any of that crap, it was just a cardboard decor.
During those years, the real problem, at least for kids, more than the lack of freedom, was Religion and priests. We lived in a religious dictatorship.
Kids that wanted to learn English during summer could only go to Catholic Ireland, of course....the "Perfid Albion" was totally verbotten.

Excuse me but how are Protestants evil?

I never knew the Spanish were bigots. I thought the island of Ireland was the only place with bigotry. I was hoping to get away from that. I guess not.
