I am doing some long range planning for an extended visit to Germany. Most of this will be spend in the Frankfurt area, but I am intending on a visit to the Bavarian Alps, either DiY or via a package tour.

Goal is to take in Konigsee/Berchtesgaden as the main destination, w. side trip to Salzburg (maybe).

Is October a good time to travel in the Bavarian Alps? I am wondering about the optimum time to travel there for good weather/clear skys.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Congrats on your upcoming trip!

You should enjoy good, crisp fall weather in Bavaria, especially southern Bavaria, that time of year. Also, you shouldn't run into too much snow, even at the higher altitudes. I think you will really enjoy it.

Just remember - layered clothing is your key to happiness! Mornings and evenings will be quite chilly, but if it's sunny then the afternoons can warm up quite a bit.

Be sure you check out Wurzburg, Aschaffenburg, Miltenburg, and Mespelbrunn while you're in the Frankfurt area - lovely towns and castles! I love to simply drive along the Main River in that area and just stop at various castles and quaint towns along the way. Also, the Odenwald region is very close to Frankfurt, with lovely villages and castles and ancient churches there as well.

Have fun!

Berchtesgaden comes highly recommended. I visited Kehlsteinhaus (Eagle's Nest) three years ago. The steep road up and the view from the top was quite spectacular.

You are NOT KIDDING! Here are a few of my personal photos from a trip two years ago in June:

Hitler's study:

This is the room that is in so many photos of the Eagles Nest from Hitler's era - that used to have groupings of easy chairs instead of tables.

Excellent pictures of the Eagles Nest. I have some very similar pictures from my visit in 2006.

September and October are utterly GLORIOUS in the Alpine region! EXCELLENT choices--Konigsee and Berchtesgaden! Definitely try to make time for a couple of days in Salzburg, too.

Are you going alone? Berchtesgaden produces much of the traditional folk garb people in the region wear, so it's a great place for shopping for that stuff, if you'll have a female traveling companion who might be into that stuff. The summer stuff is on clearance sale that time of year, too.

Thanks for the advice!!!

I am looking for clear or mostly clear weather and want to avoid a rainy season, and it looks like early fall is the time..Sept/October.

I will be going with my ma and pa and perhaps sister....this alpine visit comes at the behest of my ma, whos been here before. But I wanted to find the optimal time of year to travel.

THanks for the rec on Wurzburg, Aschbursch, Mespelbrunn, etc...I have been to all these. We had relatives in Nurnburg and did some excursion out into Franconia as part of our Nurnberg visits, and of course Aschaffenburg and Mespelbrunn are on the way.

The alps, tho, will be new territory for me....

I once spent a week in mid-October on the southern side of the Alps (Lago Maggiore) and it POURED the entire time. I don't know how indicative that is of the weather on the north side, but on my drive back via Basel to Paris for my flight home, the rain didn't really let up at all.
