No. They are inseparable part of Russia and Russian mentality.
They don't belong with European Union, they belong with Russia and nothing is going to change it, as much as they'd love to see it differently.

I think that's up to Ukrainians themselves to decide We're not in the 1980s anymore.

It has got nothing to do with the 1980ies but with the fact that Russia itself started with Ukraine and Kiev was the first capital of Russia.

We also kinda had a special relationship with half of central and eastern Europe at some point It would never cross my mind to doubt the independence of those countries, though.

So what? Ukraine is no longer part of Russia and from what I can see, they are trying very hard to distance themselves from Russia any way they can. National boundaries are changing all the time, just take a look at how the map of Europe has changed over the centuries.

The only "special relationship" you have is the one with Germany, really.

I personally identify Austrians as the "French version of Germans")))

You can take away Ukraine from Russia, but you can't take away a Russian from a Ukrainian.

Well, then you obviously don't know anything about the history of Austria-Hungary.

You mean Austrian-Hungarian Empire?

Why, I've heard a thing or two, but...the language, the culture ( be that Hungarians or Czecs) - nope, sorry, those relations were not "special" enough.
Besides, is it a first time when Germans ( ugh, sorry - Austrians ) unite under their umbrella someone/something else?

I suspect that a few centuries from now, if Ukraine as a country still exists, Ukrainians will think of their historical connection to Russia the same way Hungarians think of their connection to Austria, or Fins of their connection to Sweden, or the Benelux of their connections to each other or to Spain, etc. The fact that Kiev was once the capital of Russia will just be an interesting anecdote, kind of like how Istanbul was once the capital of the eastern Roman Empire.
