I ask again though, what are these 'attractions' that German cities have that are lacking in British or French cities??

Tough question indeed. Once again , I didn't say that British and French cities were lacking attractions, don't ride on your high horses here. But as I won't enumerate all the attractions one can find in German cities, I'll ask you in turn : what is the British equivalent of the (like it or not, personally I'm not a fan of those large gatherings of people) Oktoberfest in Munich ? the "festival-in-the-mud"? (Glastonbury)-LOL-. Similarly I don't see any equivalent in Britain of the winter Carnaval in Cologne (and other cities), which start "at 11 hour the eleventh day of the eleventh month of the year" and lasts...until MardiGras in early March! not to mention the famous (and often tasteless I agree) Christmas Markets that are now conquering....Britain! and all those mid-sized cities with their symphonic orchestras and "Jazz kellers"...not sure there is such a density of musical venues in the UK (certainly not in France)

Not such a density of musical venues! Is this a joke! The UK is the centre of world fpopular music! What about the Reading festival just for one example? Do you honestly believe that there are no festivals in the UK!! loool, the winter carnival in Cologne is probably very nice but the Notting Hill Carnival (next weekend by the way) is the biggest carnival in the world outside of South America, do you seriously believe there is no place for the Manchester Philharmonic Orchestra to play in Manchester? Tell me the German equivalent of Cowes week? Look I don't know for sure but I would like to bet there are more live music venues in UK cities than in either both France or Germany, bars, clubs, pubs, restaurants, cafe's are all in all UK cities, as well as shopping centres if thats what you are looking for, there are cities like Bath (named after the incredibly well preserved Roman Baths, Lincoln (medieval cathedral) and Chester to name but a few, I would also hasten to add that sporting venues in UK cities are un-matched anywhere else in Europe, is there anywhere in Germany that can match the West End for theatres? There are dozens of festivals in every city in the UK (usually summer festivals), last weekend I went to Eastbourne, sat on a beach and watched an International Airshow over the sea, in the evening I was treated to live music at the same beach (and for free). I ask again what exactly do French or German cities have that British ones lack exaclty?

Germany has Dachau and Buchenwald, what does the UK have?

wow, easthome, calm down! I said "not sure" , it's different than "sure not", because -maybe as a Continental-I've never heard of the Cowed festival or the Eastbourne air show for instance -my loss, surely. I agree that the UK is -after the USA-the second most important country for world pop music. One would need a study to evaluate the concentration of museums, theaters, festivals in the cities of each of both countries, maybe the UK would end up winning, but again, maybe not. For instance, the collections of ancient egyptian and Greek art in the Museuminsel in Berlin are as rich as what what can find in the British Museum. And personally I have a weakness for the South German Rococo style and I fail to see sometning as striking in Britain, but it's true I know better Germany than Britain, so maybe it's just my ignorance.

Hamburg just made the list of the 10 best cities worldwide to live in, not bad.

to me there something about germany, the other mentioned countries don't have: environmental consciousness. what germany does, is close to an obsession (whenever we come to visit we have to update our knowledge about recycling .....). but it is so important and I love it. we have also visited france and Scottland and england recently and the standards are very different.

another thing I love about Germany: they offer so many very inexpensive summer camps for kids (adventure playground) - like 15 bucks for the whole week, where kids can freely explore, build, play, just be kids. and family tickets to public pools are about 10 bucks for the whole day - and those are now just holes in the ground, but feature several pools, slides, towers, soccer fields .....just anything you want.- we at least have not seen that either in france nor in great britain.
