I can place easily all countries (in the world) in a map, all US states, all capitals in the world and all big cities. except some small ones like saint vincent des grenadines.
I think it has mostly to do with a lack of interest in the world and with missing foreign language skills why Americans know few provinces etc. abroad. US states have easy names, usually of Spanish or Indian origin, simple syllable structure, easy to remember, even states we usually can't locate, we often know the names like Idaho or Alabama or Oregon.
And as far as US states are concerned, Hollywood plays hardly any role there as movies and TV programs are usually set in LA or NYC, states are irrelevant, which is why most people don't even know there is a NY state as well, not just the city.
Foreigners know 4 or 5 states mostly because of tourism or some extreme property like size (Texas, California) or location (Hawaii islands).
No it's not. Berlin and Rome are capitals. Never, really never, you'll heard about Philadelphia in European newspapers.. Why would they speak about this place ?
Let me see if I can do a recap.
Your belief is that the world should know all major European cities because they are capitals, but no European should be expected to know Philadelphia, because it's not in European newspapers (AND it's not a capital), and therefore irrelevant to Europeans, and unworthy of knowing anything about.
That statement is way too euro-centric. So Los Angeles which has very little connection whatsoever with what happens in Budapest, is required to know Budapest, simply because it's a European capital, and Europeans find that relevant, so therefore people in Los Angeles should too.

There is always a Euro-centric double standard on the internet Europe is the best and America is fat, stupid, and armed. And it's not only the Europeans who perpetuate this, anytime an American whines about the government and how they long to move to Europe or even Canada they perpetuate the stereotypes.

The constant bashing of America is a "side effect" of being a superpower.
It's hilarious to see two guys posting something like "Being a superpower is a dirty job, but somebody's gotta do it", when there is the possibility that they work as grocery sakers at Walmart

More bashing of America from Europeans. Can't think outside the common stereotypical attacks, can you? What else is new...

Are you implying that being a Grocery saker at Wal-Mart is a bad thing?
