As to the British, hadn't been for the channel they would have invaded by absolutely everybody, so valiant they are not. Italians, too civilized.
And you know this how exactly? The British have come to the aid of our continental 'friends' on more than one occasion, with an attitude like yours next time we may not.

The British managed to build the largest empire in human history, defeating the French more than once in the process, alone or with allies (100 years war / French and Indian wars / Napoleonic wars). Give them credit...

This hilarious documentary deals with some of the stereotypes, among which cowardice, that foreigners have long harboured regarding the French. Hilarious. The part about 'Pepe le Pew' from the old Warner Bros. cartoons had me in stitches.

You've got to understand French to get the most out of it. Never thought my high school canuck french classes would come in handy.

Without the channel, you would be France.

The channel, that was your only weapon. British "intervened" in European wars, while never been really in those wars thanks to the channel.

Now, French cowards? I would like to know how long the UK would have resisted the blitzkrieg if they had no channel. French fought well, but were treasoned by their politics. They fought well in Indochina, Argelia, etc.

I am an American, not a Brit. Good teeth, bad pronunciation (talking about stereotypes )

Surely, the Channel helped. But you guys were the biggest country in Europe for most of your history. And one of the richest. The French population was actually larger than Russian until early XIX or so.

Britain was just well governed, and made right strategic decisions. The Channel would have meant nothing without the Royal Navy. And the Royal Navy could always be counted on to stop any invasion, from Armada to the French and Dutch fleets to Sea Lion. And there was no Channel preventing the French from taking India, Australia, Canada, etc. Just giving credit where it's due...

And you know this 'how' exactly? The British were the ONLY nation to resist the blitzkrieg, while everybody else threw up their arms and before our American cousins entered the war the British fought on - alone.

The Blitzkrieg stopped at the channel, and Addie let the British expeditionary force in Dunkirk leave. He was crazy and at that time wanted some sort of agreement.

The Royal Navy is just a myth, they did not stop the armada. Remember, they were just pirates for centuries and if they survived was because France and Spain were always fighting like dog and cats.

Britain survived because they served as a counterbalance between Spain and France - Hapsburgs and Bourbons.
