Well a nation obviously was asking more than just "a monopoly on Russian market" ( that is if you are talking about Russians,) they were obviously looking for improvements of their lot, but in many ways the USSR was of course more beneficial for Russians as a nation than what came after.

And ok, I'll forgive you as living in America, but the International Olympic Committee is probably the most corrupted force in the world together with FIFA. No doubt about that. One hand washes the another? Hell no, the one hand washes the other's butt!

I didn't know that, but as I've already said when the finger is usually pointed at Russia in terms of corruption, I already know that it takes two to tango.

You might be right about that "butt washing" after all.
Am reading now the article how "Russia scrambles to get hotels ready for Games ( I mean if those hotels were ready by now, I'd be upset, almost disappointed - where is the suspense, the nail biting excitement for national pride and glory? )

and this is what I see;

"We have our first customers coming on Feb. 6," said Oliver Kuhn, manager of the Swissotel in the Krasnaya Polyana ski resort, which will host the Alpine skiing in the Caucasus mountains above Sochi."

Olympics-Russia scrambles to get hotels ready for Games | Reuters

Quoting famous Russian classic - "and what do I see - all the familiar faces"))))

Swissotel. Yep. Anybody else as trendy and upbeat? (And I was always wondering whether the hotels there were built by Turks. )

And here is more;

Olympic Games in Sochi set world record for investments - marketing specialists - News - Russia - The Voice of Russia: News, Breaking news, Politics, Economics, Business, Russia, International current events, Expert opinion, podcasts, Video

"Nikolai Dolgopolov, deputy editor-in-chief of the Rossiyskaya Gazeta, explains the current rush of Russian and foreign partners by the uniqueness of the Sochi Olympics."

So who are you, mysterious "foreign partners"?
I'd like to see the list.
We are talking about the "uniqueness" here.
I'm curious.
I probably want to know too much.

OMG, don't forget Thor Heyerdahl! He's gotten a bad rap in some corners, undeservedly.

Oh, great, we get to blame Balt "backwardness" (or poverty, whatever) on the Germans! I'm down with that. They wiped out the indigenous Prussian people, the 3rd Baltic republic, so to say.

Ah OK, well, and as the rest of the story has it, then a big chunk of these Germans (from Baltic countries) moved to study to St. Petersburg's Universities and became Russians.
( and the other part moved to Germany and became Nazi.)

The end.

Oh, that's interesting. So that's where Russia's Germans came from? Cool. So they were there long before the world wars. Thanx for that bit of info. (C-d can be so educational! )

You did not answer my question.

In Russia, the Olympics are treated with humor:

-We spent a lot of money on the Olympics.
- Well, at least it will be normal?
- No, we steal more than half.
- Ok, there are rumors that Vancouver was worse.
