You sound like you are talking about the US of A, where safety is really a concern. Europe is safe in general and so is Paris. There are some suburbs you'd better avoid, like the ones where the riots took place several years ago. Paris is very expensive and finding something for only a month instead of staying in a hotel seems rather uncommon.
Safety is a real concern in USA? lol?
Not calling Paris dangerous by any means.. but a person definitely has a higher probability of facing crime in a large European city than an American city. We don't have pick pockets and that kind of street crime like Europe does.
That being said, you can be a victim of crime anywhere. The most dangerous place in the world is the place where you see crime.
Paris is perfectly safe, particularly from a U.S. standpoint. Of course the usual precautions apply - don't flash the rolex or iPhone in a poor area or on public transport - but if you can deal with any American city you can deal with Paris. Don't listen to people who say the northeastern arrondissements (10th, 18th, 19th, 20th) are "scary" and "dangerous". They certainly have an "edge" but are absolutely fine if you are used to cities generally and have your wits about you; in fact these areas are gentrifying fast and in my opinion are much more interesting and vibrant places to be than the more sanitised, bourgeois arrondissements in the centre, south and west of the city.
This covers the city of Paris itself: there are really dangerous ghettos in the Greater Paris area but conversely to the U.S. these tend to be in the outer suburbs - as a tourist you have no reason to go anywhere near them unless you are a Vice journalist or edgy thrill seeker.
Watch for rapists at night in the metro and in isolated (remote) parts of the city as well as the closing times of night clubs (stalkers).
Beware of taxis, if they feel you are hesitating in your directions, they will drive you around instead of heading straight to your place.
Avoid the hellhole that is the red light district (Pigalle quarter).
Be wary of aggressive beggars.
Beware of scams from "con artists" (tourists are their favorite prey)
I can't thing of other things right now, but don't listen to those (above) who see Paris with rose-colored glasses.
Be always "aloof".
