I had my doubts about it, until I realized why *Ukrainian patriots* fight tooth and nail Russian preposition "на" (on) used traditionally in Russian language in connection with "Ukraine," while for the rest of the countries Russian language uses preposition "в" (in.)
The reason for it of course is that the preposition "on" indicates the origin of the word "Ukraine" in Russian. Which is precisely "on the outskirts."
I think the dispute about "на" (on) or "в" (in) is minor. I'd say the [great and might ] Russian language plays the trick with all us.
There is a word in the Russian language "okraina". It has the Slavic pedigree and means "Outskirts" or "the place at the edge". The Russians say "Dom stoit na okraine" - "The house stays outskirts". The word "okraina" is absolutely neutral. It has neither positive nor negative shade.
The word "Ukraina" sounds very like "Okraina" and it's comfortable for many Russians to say "Na Ukraine" like "Na okraine". There is no politics in it!

The meaning of the word is quite transparent, ukraina (slavic) = okraina (slavic) = borderland (eng).
Why did the country take such a controversial name? I don't know. Perhaps this is Polish influence. Russians called this territory "Malorossia" ("Little Russia"). But "Little" is not in a territory, but as the birthplace of Russia. By analogy with "Little homeland" (city or place where person spent his\her childhood) etc.

You are killing the sons of your birthplace? You direct your swords against your mother and brothers!
Go home and stop the war!

Didn't the Poles call Ukraine Ruthenia though? And didn't the term Malorossia come form the Greeks? And why the term Velikorossiya?
Trump's chief economic advisor Gary Cohn was reportedly approached by several EU representatives for discussions on lifting earlier sanctions on Russia. The sanctions favor US LNG exporters who hope to replace Russia's natural gas supplies to the EU. In the article, he complained that reporters repeatedly tried to twist it around to the Trump administration unilaterally favoring the ending of the sanctions.
As in Syria, energy and business is the key motivation here, not national security.
As I understand, "Ruthenia" is Latin form writing Rus. Like "Russia" is Greeks form of Rus. It is not calling of the territory modern Ukraine. Most likely term "Ukraine" (as calling the region) is Polish invention.
Term "Ukrainian nation" is also a Polish invention. It was required in order to alienate a Rus population in the territories that was joined to Rzecz Pospolita. Russian Empire tried to combine three East Slavic branches into a single nation, but Bolsheviks stopped this process.

We will never ever be brothers -
not by motherland, not by mothers.
Your souls aren’t free, they’re crippling -
we won’t even become step-siblings.
Our “big brother,” - we don’t believe you -
we’ll be younger, but not beneath you.
You are many, but faceless of late,
you’re enormous perhaps, we’re – great.
But you smother… orbiting zealously,
you will choke one day on your jealousy.
Freedom’s foreign to you, unattained,
from your childhood, you’ve been chained.
In your home, “silence’s golden” prevails,
but we’re raising up Molotov cocktails.
In our hearts, blood is boiling, sizzling,
and you’re kin? – you blind ones, miserly?
There’s no fear in our eyes, it’s effortless,
we are dangerous even weaponless.
We have grown, became brave outright
while the snipers held us in sight.
Executioners forced us to kneel –
we stood up and all was repealed.
Rats are hiding from us, but they’re lot
is to wash themselves clean in blood.
They are sending new orders, devising,
we are lighting the flames of uprising.
From your Tsar, our Democracy’s severed.
We will never be brothers ever.

Alec, that do you think? Ukraine is nation's country or country of nations?
