What are the main differences between Czech and Slovak cultures? They used to be one country, and are of course very close to each other. Was one there before the other for a significant period of time, and with the other a relatively recent arrival? Is one of them like the Hungarians, in the sense, that the Hungarians are Magyars who arrived during the middle ages from Asia somewhere? Are there foods different

I think Slovakia is poorer. Not really familiar with Slovakian culture. The Hostel (horror movie) portray a very disturbing image of today's Slovakia.

I am pretty sure it is widely exagerated. I play hockey with some Czechs. I guess I can ask them too.

The Hostel movie doesn't really try to portray an image of Slovakia as much as a horror setting :-). Historically both countries claim to originate from Great Moravia (830 AC), which was pretty much in the area where present day Slovakia, Czech Republic and Hungary are. It was created by the joinning of the historical principality of Moravia (based in the territory of present day Moravia, Czech Republic) and principality of Nitra (with centrum based in the present day city of Nitra, Slovakia). Bohemia (now the biggest part of the Czech Republic) has then consisted only of different slavic tribes in Great Moravia. Great Moravia fell with the arrival of the Hungarians. The part of the Great Moravia which belonged to the Nitria was after that for most of the history under the Hungarian rule while the original region of Moravia remained with the Czech tribes and survived to this day as a part of the Czech lands. The amount of people living in present day Moravia, Czech Republic who claim to be of Moravian nationality as opposed to Czech/Bohemina is sharply decreasing (only 630,000 in 2011).

The Hostel portrayed Slovakia as a rundown, corrupt and brutal country. Slovakian officials expressed deep concern and were offended as hell. Not just your usual horror movie. To make things even worse the movie was shot on location in Czech Republic and the locals spoke Czech. That said, IMO it's a disgusting exploitation movie.

Do you really believe in everything you see ( especially fiction movies) or read ( fiction books) or Internet spam?
