By buying Ben & Jerry's you are basically cross-financing their huge marketing department abroad, though. Which results in those ridiculous prices. Just take Mövenpick or whatever other icecream brands there are in Europe. Certainly not as expensive as that.

Costs are met by sales worldwide and Unilever a giant multinational already had a major marketing department in the US before it purchased Ben & Jerry's.

Whilst in terms of HQ's it's cheaper to Headquarter a company in London than in the US, hence the number of US Companies moving to London.

I know that Britain is an attractive place to headquarter a business and that Unilever has some sort of headquarter there (just like there is Unilever's CEE headquarter right next to my office building in Vienna).

That doesn't change the fact that you are financing a company that is primarily depending on heavy marketing campaigns.

And by the way: I doubt that Unilever (as their parent company) is handling their marketing.

Unilever is the world's third-largest consumer goods company measured by 2012 revenue, after Procter & Gamble and Nestlé and one of the oldest multinational companies, its products are available in around 190 countries and it uses Marketing methods the same as any other multinational company.

Unilever is mainly Dutch and British indeed a lot of research is still carried out at it's vast Port Sunlight plant near Liverpool (which was home to the Lever Brothers original company) as well Colworth Science Park in Bedfordshire, and in terms of advertising their are numerous multinational advertising companies with offices in Europe and the US, indeed many are based in London one of the worlds advertising hubs.

My point being it already has a massive advertising network in place as well as HQ's and a global support network.

Exactly. Youre not paying importcosts in here, youre paying marketing.

My point with this was mainly that its produced in here, not that its owned by Unilever. Unilever is one of the biggest food companies on the planet, and they have plants anywhere, so just them owning it doesnt mean so much for where a product is produced or how. For anybody interested, this is the Ben & Jerry's factory in Hellendoorn, the Netherlands :

You are going to be paying for marketing any way and if you already have a multitude of brands you already have marketing companies and advertising agencies working for you. Many of these advertising and marketing companies being multinational themselves.

Sure, but there are brands that spend much more on it than others. You can buy the cheaper supermarket icecream that really doesnt differ that much from Ben & Jerry's (and are often produced in the same factories), but they are cheaper as they dont have a massive marketingcampaign behind them.
