People from Southern Europe like Italy, Spain and Portugal are shorter than people from Northern Europe. The Dutch seem to be tallest people in the world, supposedly because the quality of nutrition is the highest here.

Also, people from colder climates tend to be bigger overall than people from warmer climates.

Bigger over-all than southern peopel? I don't think so, ancient Romans were known for being short and stocky.

Racial Reality - Ancient Romans

So anyone else who has been to Italy really believe the average man there is 5'9?

Human height - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Data measured in 2005 claimes men ages 18-40 on average are 5'9 1/2. I don't believe it for some reason, I know southern Italians must be shorter, the average height for men in Southern Italy 18-40 must be around 5'8 but Nothern Italy is the most populous region in Italy added with the south so that would bring the average up.

I'm 5'9" and feel really average here in Italy, and it's good.

It seems there are a lot of guys who are about 5'7" and skinny, much more so than in France, but you can also meet 6'2" big guys, so I guess it's really varied.

Of course if you live in the netherlands it might seem short....

I think only Sardinians are 1.72m. South Italians usually are between 1.73 and 1.75. People up in the Alps must be at least 1.81m.

Statura - Wikipedia

to read the map:

in the red areas the male average height it's >177cm (5'9.75)
in the yellow area the average height it's between 175cm (5'9) and 177cm (5'9.75)
in the blue part it's between 173cm (5'8) and 175cm (5'9)
in the green part it's lower than 173cm (5'8)

data are refereed to the "coscritti del 2000", that are the guys born in 1982.

Italians aren't southern European ethnically they're northern European. They're Germanic so no, they aren't short. If they're short then so are dutch. If some Italians are short its probably because they aren't completely Italian, they're part Greek or Spaniard, those short Mediterranean people

I'm up in the Alps and 1,80 m.
Generally men here are between 1,75 and 1,80 on average but I could number several people I know taller than 1,80.

Italians are all midgets, that's why Real Estate is divided between housing for Italians and them foreigners. The average Italian apartment is 10 x 10 feet and the largest car made specially for Italians is Fiat 500. Italians only eat pizzas "bambina", very small pizzas.
