Ok, I live in North Orange County, California and after I graduate, I'm going off to college in Ireland and I need help. What should I know about Ireland? I know it rains a lot and I'm used to a sunny climate even though I dearly love the rain, so what should I know about that?
You'll get a much more usable response if you ask specific questions, and give other members more information to go on.
Area of Ireland?
College?
Interests?
I'm sorry I wasn't being specific. I guess that's what I get for posting while doing homework.
I'm planning on going to UCD in Dublin of course. What are some things I should know about the local scene, and how far is good nightlife away from there?
I was in Dublin back in October and I think you'll really like it. TONS of young people. It's one of the youngest cities in Europe, per capita. Good shopping, great public transportation, good food, walkable, historic, etc. etc. I would imagine that going to college there will be a great experience. The weather in October wasn't bad. Little rain and we got by with light jackets.
Dublin is a fantastic city especially if you're young. Great nightlife, wonderful pubs, fantastic cultural scene if you like the arts, the theatre etc.. fabulous libraries and it is vibrant, cosmopolitan and just brilliant.
The architecture is beautiful and the whole of Ireland will take your breath away. Yes it does rain a lot but with scenic beauty like that who cares ! It would hardly be the Emerald Isle if it didn't rain.
Do yourself a favour and get out and about , there is so much history and culture to imbibe ( as well as Guiness and Whiskey) and it is truly a stunning country of rich and varied landscape. Try Glendalough and NewGrange for a bit of spiritual uplifting, the ring of Kerry and my favourite of all Galway with the awesome and utterly beautiful Connemara region.
Ireland has changed a lot in the last 20 years and gone from being very poor to doing very well economically and though it has changed some of the slower pace of life, it is still one of my favourite places on earth.
Take some waterprooof clothes and enjoy it. There is nothing quite as beautiful as the rugged and windswept Connemara and Burren, rain or shine and believe me it does not always rain. It feels like it but there is a lot of sunshine and when it pierces the clouds , it is like a burst of heavenly light come upon this blessed island.
And the Irish people are usually extremely friendly, warm and very funny. The music is pretty darn good too.
Enjoy it, embrace the weather and let yourself be enchanted by one of the world's true great Beauties.
I am quite jealous actually...
Just to add my 2cents about the weather... It's not so much the rain that can get to people, it's the 7+ months of winter (you will wake up to darkness, and it'll be dark when you get out of school for the day!) Since Ireland is as far north as Canada, you will experience a lot more night time for half of the year! There are years when you won't have more than 4 days of summer like weather, then poof- it's winter all over again, LOL!! Dublin is a great place for students BTW ,and I'm sure you will have a great, rewarding experience despite the weather.
