Feyenoord fans did it! They managed to look even more despicable today, not only did they create havoc in Rome's city center but today they threw an inflatable banana at Gervinho (Who is, you guessed it, a black player)

There have allways been lots of banana's in the Feyenoord stadium. They allways were in the stadium in the 80's and 90's, just for fun. The Feyenoord club removed them because too much supporters were throwing them in the field. The fans are trying to get them back for years, using the slogan "bring back the banana's"

Allthough i understand people will see it that way, and it wasn't a smart thing to do after Paris, it has nothing to do with racism.

this is an article about it a few years back Feyenoord - Heracles: bananen in De Kuip | Feyenoord

Reading this thread explains a lot. There are racists alive and well all over the world. Not wanting people in your country because they might mess up your bloodline is racist. Bragging about being white is racist. Wow. Who knew it was so bad in Europe?

Ah ok, seems a bit of a poor choice to display them in a European game where the opposing players, the opposing fans and the referee waren't aware of this thinking it may be racism. Anyway, one of those somehow ended up on the pitch close to Gervinho and he clearly thought it was addressed at him.

Yeah he made it pretty clear he thought that. I think this is mostly because of "banana incidents" in the UK of hooligans throwing bananas at black players scanning monkey sounds, that they automatically associate it with rasism. But this kind of racism against blacks never really was an issue in the Feyenoord stadium. Lots of the Feyenoord players are black, and the hooligans and supporters love them.

The inflatable bananas was a thing blown over from the UK in the 80's. They actually introduced that into the stadiums as a fun thing and an non violent statement against the hooligan violence. There was even a song about it in the 80's. They played it on the radio yesterday, but i can't find it on YT.

To be fair Feyenoord fans were quickly condemned as racist in all the news sites in Italy. They are being portrayed as the not so bright side of civilized Netherlands, really they've among the major topics all week, the destroying of the fountain really left a mark, only after 10 days the talk about what's happened that day is disappearing

Well they are the not so bright side of the Netherlands, they're right about that. But luckily they're just a really small part of us
They're just nog right about the racist part with the banana. But i guess that was just too beautifull for the bloodhounts of the press

I heard a Dutch university is collecting money to finance the restauration of the fountains, and a lot of people are giving money. Also a few companies offered their specialist help with reconstructing. I think the fountains are gonna be OK
