The 13-year-old pupil who killed a Spanish language teacher with a makeshift crossbow could escape prosecution since the country's age of criminal responsibility is 14.

Compare that with a 13-year-old who mugged and killed a passerby in England and was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 12 years Life term for 13-year-old boy over woman's punch murder - BBC News

Spain needs to rethink its criminal justice system because having a maniac as young of this one roaming the streets is just asking for trouble.

Interesting. Age of criminal responsibility in the UK is 10. At 13, clearly they know what they are doing, as they are not little kids and know full well what is right and wrong.

Our age of criminal responsibility is also 14. IMO a good thing since a long term in prison would do more harm to society in the long run. No formal education and living with other convicts greatly improves the chances of a criminal fallback.

That said, sure there are always a few cases where a long sentence seems to be the only just thing. But consider this. Chances are that he'll spend a few years in a psych ward or a similar institution anyway.

Very good reason and answer which is why I find systems like this in countries like Spain absolutely a laughing stock.

They will probably just get him out after a few months and then just put in a psychic ward.

Then they will all forget that it happened.

The kid is nuts, I don't think those kids should go to normal schools. I believe that penal age at 10 is kind of Dickensian, barbaric. That kid should be locked for life not in a prison, that would be idiotic, but in a place similar to Shutter Island.

In what way is it Dickensian? It's a little young maybe. These people will never be 'normal' - normal people do not randomly kill others. They will more than likely be locked away in either prison or a secure mental unit, so where they are makes no difference as they will likely never be members of normalised society ever again.

Our age of criminal responsibility is 15! People under 18 cannot be sentenced for life in prison.

It isn't like they throw an 11 year old in a hardline prison anyway. The most likely outcome for someone who is 11 or 12 is they would go to a secure children's home rather than any prison-type institution.

So really, it's very unlikely that a 10 year old would be sent to prison, or even a young offender's institute. In fact, it's unlikely a 10 year old would be convicted of any crime at all.

In Ireland, it's 7. SEVEN. And I thought ours was young. It's 16 in Spain and 18 in Belgium, which seems on the high side. 16 years is too young to be convicted of a crime?

life impronment for a 13-year old is insanity imo. lock him up in a mental institution up until his 18th birthday. keep in mind 5 year is a very long time when you're that young.

**** off! I'm sad because looks like European kids want to emulate mass shootings murders like those ones they often have in the United States!
