I will have a 4 full days in Reykjavik on my way back to the US from Danmark.

Is it worth having a rental car to see outside the city (I know Reyk is small and can be done in a day)?

I'd like to see the Blue Lagoon and the Golden Circle and I know I can book bus tours for those. But is there much else to see that I will need a car?

Yes its very good to rent a car, like 4x4 it will only cost you 40000 isk wich is great cause you are giving us money. Or just rent a tow seated car for 8000 isk that is more handy. But i recommend that you rent a car but you have to pay for gaseline and if you loose a tire or break the window or damage the car you have to pay. P.s Blue lagoon is not natural its a water coming from Svartsengi powerplant.
But yes rent a car if you dont want to take a bus that will only make you stop for limited amount of time and will only go after plan. If you rent a car you can go everywhere and stay as long as you want on beautiful places.

Tak. I had a hire car, was able to see things at my own pace, and grocery shop (I rented a flat).
A much better way to see Island.

I'm dying to go back to your amazing country.
