My husband and I are retiring and would like to spend a year in either Italy or France. We've visited both countries a number of times and speak a little of both languages.
We have looked at long stay visas for both countries and Italy seems a bit easier in some ways. France requires an in person interview at one of the 2 French embassies, which is a 6 hr plane ride for us.
We would not be looking to work nor sign up for medical in either location. We also plan to bring our fur baby. I would also be curious to know how difficult it is to buy property in either place.
I don't know about France or Italy specifically but many countries allow anyone to buy property although doing so does not grant the right of residence. So be very carefull as if you buy a house in such a country then find you can't renew your visa you are ruined. You really want a permanent resident's visa before you consider buying property.

Hello,
I don't know for Italy - and I don't think I can help much with my own country, but if you choose France, do you have an idea of where you want to go exactly or... ?
For property, It depends on the location - but I think you may already know, maybe.
OK.
It's a popular destination for expatriates and all, you know Bergerac ? There's plenty of them there. I'm sure you'll find a good property for not too much and as you speak a little French it's even better, there's gonna be a lot of paper to sign and everything so it'll help.
And fur baby no problem...
I don't know what I can say to help you choose but well if you have more specific questions on the area maybe I can answer.
