I'm Bulgarian and I can usually guess 80-95% who is Bulgarian and who isn't. It's usually the ones with straight noses, slightly tan skin and green or dark eyes. Also in the way they move, which may sound weird!
Though I'm pretty sure people can't tell that I'm Bulgarian because I have very pale skin, light hair, and overall not very Bulgarian-like!
There was some psychological theory that people are more likely to recognize faces of people from their own age group and race, and of people they grew up around -- most likely their own ethnic group.
Sometimes, but the biggest dividing line in many European countries is based on the use of the word "strangers", which means "outsiders" in "them-or-us" framework, a cancer attacking a healthy cell. In Denmark, this word is used a lot, but the newest term applied to strangers is "of another ethnic origin". It's pretty insidious.
