Is there anywhere in Russia that is warm enough to grow grapes for making wine?

um.... Crimea? The main wine-growing region was Moldova, but that's not in Russia anymore. And Crimea wasn't part of Russia, but it is now, at least until the next exchange of firepower.

Crimea has had several famous wineries that are hundreds of years old. They made wine for Russian Czars.

Yes. I think the answer hinges on how the OP defines "Russia". But Crimea is part of Russia for the time being, so Crimea wins, I suppose.

(Crimean politics aside) Yes, there is wine produced in Russia, primarily in the Krasnodar area. Wines from Georgia, Moldova, and Crimea are also popular.

But in general, plenty of Russia is warm enough for wine producing. But as with many industries, there are just areas best suited for it, thus more popular for producing on a large scale.

Grape vines have grown around the Caspian, Black and Azov seas for thousands of years with evidence of viticulture and cultivation for trade with the Ancient Greeks found along the shores of the Black Sea at Phanagoria and Gorgippia. It is claimed that the Black Sea area is the world's oldest wine region.
Russia produces wine of several different styles including still, sparkling and dessert wine. Currently there are over 100 different varieties of grapes used in the production of Russian wine.

You might find this article on a subject quite interesting -

Ukraine says Crimea vintage wine sale at Massandra illegal - BBC News

"A spokesman for Ukraine's agriculture ministry, Olexander Liev, warned Massandra staff that they would be held "criminally responsible for the illegal sale of Ukrainian national heritage"."

( Yeah, "Ukrainian heritage" my a** )

And may be this one too.

http://www.nytimes.com/2014/05/29/wo...mult.html?_r=0

( a good video there)))

So yes...
Massandra's vines are quite special - were very much appreciated by our grand-parents generation from what I remember)))

P.S. As for me personally - I always preferred Georgian red vines.
Still do.

Over the last five years or so, I've noticed an increasing amount of Moldovan wine in the US. Of the few I've had, they were a mixed bag. Some were awful, some were surprisingly good, all were reasonably priced.
Guess we have to work east thu Ukrainian wine first before we see Russian wine in the US.
Anyone ever seen a review of a Russian wine in the western wine press?
