That just reminded me of a story I heard in Rocky Mtn National Park. A European family thought they could ride their bikes from the park to Canada and back, all in one evening . They had NO idea just how big Wyoming and Montana really were.

I am a dual citizen, and lived half of my life in Paris and Milan, and the other half in the US (Dallas, Chicago).

I spent many years in Paris, and I would say that they do not hate Americans. Some of my best friends are French, and I found Parisians in general to be extremely friendly. Italians also do not hate Americans. I love both countries (and I am a citizen of Italy, and could be a citizen of France if I wanted)

But I have noticed the following based on my experiences with Europeans and Americans.

- In France, I felt they had a bit of an inferiority complex vis-à-vis the US, and a bit of admiration. French men seemed to be more intrigued with the States than the French women, but the men felt more inferior/envious then the women.

- In the States, I felt like many women were very open and intrigued with French and Italian culture, and wished their husbands/boyfriends would act more European - but the American guys seemed to have an inferiority complex towards European men, maybe American men feel inferior regarding culture, art, cuisine, fashion, etc. compared to Euro guys, and therefore they may choose to criticize the Europeans as a "protection device". Plus, they know that there are many things about Europe which are better than the States, and that does not jive with their idea of the US being the greatest country on the face of the earth, therefore they react with aggressive "put downs".

I have witnessed so many episodes of American guys making complete a**es of themselves on the streets of Paris that I can completely understand first hand the definition of Ugly American. I could write a book...

In both continents, it's the guys who had the most problems with the other ... I think it's hilarious.

Hey, it's my opinion...

I can only speak for france. I live in France and I can say that there is a very strong anti US thing . I'm just 18 so I just finished high school and I can tell that the teacher really influence the pupils . Our philosophy teacher and history teacher just always used to critizes US , so the idiots who even if they don't know anything about the US just repeat the same things and hate americans. I heard a lot of people say that they hate americans because they have no culture and no taste , bad education and are not classy at all (the youngs) . The older people hate the US because of the health system , in France we have the best health sytstem ,it covers everything , a bit too much ..so here, I could say a lot more but that's what I hear the most !

I'd say the same thing is happening in the states but instead of teacher its the media and politicians who are supporting the anti-france philosophy

Just look at Kosovo, all the people there practically love the U.S. now because we helped them to independence from Serbia. People were, and probably still are, waving Kosovan and American flags out of appreciation for us.

Default Did you know?

This was in early 98, so you can't blame Dub for that one.

I'd be standing on a street corner in Lyon or Paris, and some person would walk up to me and just start talking away. I'd respond, "Parley vue Inglay" or something like that and they'd give me a look!

You know that look? That, "How dare you breathe our air" look. That was me and that was then. I still had a great time.
Where else did you go in France? Just curious

Did you know that France gave us The Statue of Liberty?

Did you know that our country here in America probably would have never become what it was if it weren't for France? The American Revolution from England was won because of help from the French. The American Colonists could never have done it alone.

I have been to France and I did not feel hated one bit. There was a language barrier that was a problem. Other than that, I really enjoyed France.
