I spent a considerable amount of time in Argentina, Uruguay and Colombia and never heard anyone say they're latinos, in fact many dislike it and many even ignore they are supposed to be Latinos.

The ones who do care about being called Latino it's the fake Latin Americans from the US. You know, Americans with mexican, cuban, puerto rican etc. heritage.
I'm not a South American, but I'm most definitely not a "fake Latin American". I speak, write, and read Spanish. My mom is from Mexico. I have a deep connection to the Latin American region and I'm proud of it, but it's true, my primary identity is American.

There are guys like saxonwold in the forum who only talk about race 24/7 and often you find it is mostly Americans and other "whites" from the anglosphere (on a lesser extent australians and canadians) who have that creppy obsession with race, NOT europeans.

Of course Italians aren't Latinos. The whole term is obscure and unclear, and not used in Europe at all. Italians are Romance-speaking Europeans.

Italians belong to the Greco-Latin-Hebraic Culture, just as most Europe and Latin America.
But "latino" is a word invented by the American Census Bureau for their own motives and reflects almos its in entirety to Mexicans, that very soon will me the majority in the US.
In the Spanish "football media", I hear they say "italo-argentines" when the player adopted Italian nationality because parents or grandparents were Italian.
Never heard anybody call "Messi" an "italo-argentine"...there are many football players from that origin.
There's another player called Ronaldo, I believe he's from Ikea.

It is certainly used in Spain, to mean just what it does in the U. S. (Latin American). One example of many you can readily find at this news site:

Blindaje policial en el barrio latino de Tetuán: asesinatos, peleas, drogas y ruido

What could be more latino than this?!

If italians aren't latinos, latinos simply don't exist.

"unclear" for just who wants to be blind.

Along with the language, cultural aspects are crystal clear in many ways: Lines not always respected, bureaucracy, delays, kisses, monumental sites, passionateness...
Yes, latinos are clearly identifiable in Europe, and latin americans are latin for being colonized by them.

As far as I know, the term was first used by Napoleon.

And I'm very proud of being latino, since I have italian/portuguese ascendence.
I'm also a little "germanic" for my german/german swiss ascendence, but as a brazilian and having portuguese as my first language I consider myself latino.

Latin kisses from Brazil!!
