I am curious as to the sentiment toward her from her electorate.

I think she is incompetent and irresponsible, a majority still seems to support her though.

What they should think is that she's a terrorist sympathizer.

Markel is incompetent and not only ruining Germany, but also the whole European Union. I don't know why she still has so many followers... maybe its just the lack of opposition in Germany, as all but the irresponsible far right wing party is spreading the Merkel propaganda.

Nobody likes her, nobody admits voting for her, but somehow she became "Kanzler."

Everybody German I know wants her gone.

Most Germans are in favor of Merkel. The economy is doing very well. People like her calm manner. But her popularity shrinked after the first issues with the refugee influx.

One reason why she is relatively popular, she doesn't have a serious competitor. Sigmar Gabriel from the SPD is a joke.

So far I personally don't see a better candidate. Sometimes I think she is too cautious. I would like to see more leading power from her.

I wonder if this can be a hefty factor in her popularity.

As in "If not Merkel, then who?" ( Sorry, just thought of something))) )

You are surely right about that. Normally the economic development is a very important aspect for the voters. Since 2005 the economy is doing very well, unemployment is falling and falling. Meanwhile most people seem to keep the good economic development for a given matter of course. People don't attribute the positive economic development to the chancellor anymore.

The terror attack today will most likely push the popularity of Merkel down. But that's in my opinion a sign how stupid the general public is. I'm really not a fan of Merkel, but generally the general public has very irrational views.
