They certainly had a motive for murdering her. She was going to marry Dodi and they would have had kids who would have been related to the royals. Dodi's father was seriously trying to be more British than the British, buying Harrod's and all. Diana was writing books that Told Everything. The royal family was looking very bad in the eyes of the world.
However, I never could figure out how they could have killed her in a car crash. Maybe I'm just naive.
This all would make sense in 1936. In 1996, the PR damage suffered by a divorced royal princess marrying the son of an Egyptian businessman would be absolutely nothing compared to what would've happened had the murder conspiracy came to light. Ever. This would quite likely spell the end of the monarchy as an institution. It would be a very foolish move, and I just can't see either the queen nor Charles attempting this. The queen especially lived her entire life trying to preserve the goodwill of the British people towards the monarchy. She could not undo all of the scandals that already happened, so one more wouldn't be as damaging.
And no James Bonds made Dodi and Diana get in the car with a visibly inebriated driver and drive at high speed through narrow tunnels.
Slobodan Milosevic. But that is no surprise, there were many who wanted him dead. And eventually he did die under suspicious circumstances.
He died after mounting a legal defense strategy that was just too embarrassing for the West and their allies in the former Yugoslavia - some of whom were even bigger monsters and mass murderers than Milosevic yet were allowed to retire, or in some instances even have a political career. So his death certainly doesn't look right.

I don't know about the US, but Diana was a huuuuuge figure in Europe. An icon - like Madonna or Michael Jackson. Over 2 billion people watched her funeral. She was simply the best PR figure the stiff upper lip Royal House could ever hope for.
Dodi wasn't some odd Muslim. He had lived all his life in Britain and France and educated in Switzerland. His religion was totally secondary. His father was also more British than many Brits. Mohamed Al-Fayed has a Finnish wife and spends a lot of time here. Actually I met him once in a bar in Helsinki. Didn't talk to him, but seemed to be a very nice and polite gentleman, maybe a bit shy.
To assassinate Diana would've been totally ridiculous.

While it's true that there's some genuine ground that Croats got away easier with their war crimes, Milosevic was a war criminal. There is absolutely no doubt about it. He was such an embarrassement that eventually his own people ousted him.
Mladic went in hiding, but even he got eventually caught.

According to that film, it was Philip orchestrating it. It made a good case for Philip being quite capable of conceiving and pulling off something like that. And the driver, we're told, was not inebriated. Of course they would have had the good sense not to get in a car with a drunk chauffeur.
It's an accident, nothing else to see.
Inebriated driver + high speed + no seatbelt = the recipe for disaster.
I know it is difficult for some to understand that even the most famous people can die in an accident.
