Donald Trump win is 'wake-up call' as Austria poised to elect first far-right President | World | News | Daily Express

ignore the trump part. I thought Van der bellen had already won? I have been keeping up with the Austrian election but in this case more great news is about to sweep Europe and the world

Van der Bellen won the election but the election has to be repeated because there were some issues with counting the ballots or whatever. As it was almost tie, FPÖ demaded a new election.

However, the president in Austria does not really influence politics, he is more or less just for representational duties, similar to Germany.

But he can if he want, the constitution would allow it, the election is repeated at the beginning of December.

Austria already had an election, VdB won and the result was overturned by a court, because of formal reasons that didn't effect the outcome. In November (October?) we tried to have a re-election, but couldn't because the envelops for people voting abroad were broken. Now we have to vote again in December.

Frankly, the president's power is very limited and dependent on both the parliament and the current government.

If "wanna-be Trump" decides to get rid of the current government, it wouldn't really matter since it's only the extended arm of the current parliament, which - in return - is able to impeach the president.

Hans Kelsen and the other guys who drafted our constitution were not complete idiots in this regard. He is not an almighty entity with unlimited powers that hasn't been discovered until now. Hofer's personal opinion on his future job, which he isn't shy about sharing with the public, doesn't matter in this regard.

Also, the Daily Express? Really? I recommend to read some real news.
