Thank god the French have better sense than the US.
I am glad the Russian attempt to interfere in your elections was ineffective, and I think y'all are better off in the EU but don't get too smug about the defeat of your nationalist/populist candidates defeat. The same forces that led to brexit and Trump are also in your nation. This populist/nationalistic movement is rising throughout the western world in response to the uber liberal policies of recent years. While I did not vote for Trump because I recognize what he is, there is no denying that those who support him have a point about uncontrollable borders and bad trade deals. In France you have some of the same issues, and you also have more of a problem with the people your nation generously let in turning around and attacking you. Immigration is good IF it is benificial to the host nation and it is properly controlled. A significant minority in France obviously are supportive of nativism and nationalism and they proved it at the ballot box. In the U.K. And the USA these folks won and in France they did not. If things keep going the way they are the next time they may win.
Le Pen did best in economically depressed rural and small-town areas of northeastern France and the Mediterranean coast. I guess these people feel left out of a France that is changing culturally and economically.
There was an online article in National Review about how the National Front's popularity was a legacy of the Algerian War. http://www.nationalreview.com/articl...-marine-le-pen

France gets an extended Hollande's presidency, hurraaa!
It also shows that Hollande has been very successful and people want more of the same even if the media wanted to show you the opposite during the last 5 years!
Don't forget that purchasing power in France since 2008 increased by 12%, highest in Europe.
I don't think the pieds-noir are a major factor in French politics. They are dying out.
I think they're part of the reason why the southeast is a FN stronghold though as a lot of pieds-noirs are concentrated there. Sure, it doesn't explain why the FN is popular in the southeast and not in the southwest even if they're marginally more numerous there (15% of the population is pied-noir or has pied-noir ancestors in PACA vs 11% in Aquitaine). The higher unemployment and foreign-born population rates on the shores of the Mediterranean probably explain part of the discrepancy.
