Long story short I found out at work that my vacation days were set to expire and I found a good deal to flights to Amsterdam in late January. Does anyone recommend any hostels and/or things to do around there? I am aware of the must see attractions like the Rijksmuseum, Anne Frank House, Heineken Experience, and the Van Gough Museum, and the Red Light District but I was wondering if there were outlying towns nearby like Gouda, Leiden, or Delft that were worth seeing as part of a day trip (or even Bruges in Belgium) since after doing some research it seems like Amsterdam isn't really representative of life in the Netherlands (much like London is in the UK or New York City/Los Angeles is in the US). I have roughly a week to spend time there so any advice is much appreciated.

Thanks

If you only have 1 week and never have been to Amsterdam, i think it has enough to offer so that you don't need to travel outside the city.
Especially if you enjoy a good joint you can try MANY coffeeshops since they all differ in atmosphere, price and quality. I stopped 2 months ago after a 12 year long addiction but if there is 1 city that has the best weed in the world, its Amsterdam. Just don't fall for the typical tourist shops where you need to pay more than 14 euro per gram.

Well since the US has legalized weed in a few states I am probably not going to spend a lot of time in coffeeshops, although I am planning to go to one just for the experience, (I have heard good things about the Grey Area). Would you say De Zaanse Schans is worth checking out since it is so close to Amsterdam?

Never been there but you could give it a shot, its only a 20 minute train ride from Amsterdam Central Station plus a 10 minute walk.

delft is small and is the site of the first assassination of a head of state by firearm. you can still see the bullet holes in the wall where William the Silent was shot. leiden is a bit larger and has a museum and students as it has a university. both have pretty canals.

Muiden is close to amsterdam and has a small castle.

the hague is different from amsterdam in that its quieter. pretty to visit. less canals. you can visit the beach at scheveningen but it'll be cold and windy. there's a casino. and a ferris wheel.

whatever you end up doing i recommend renting a bike. the lil bridges with lights at night are beautiful.

Thanks for the recommendations. By the way does anyone recommend any bars/clubs worth visiting in Amsterdam (preferably non-touristy)?
