Think about it like this then, Marseilles has more people than Barcelona (which is obviously a big city)
No it doesn't. Barcelona city proper has more people than Marseille city proper (1.6m vs 850k), and the Barcelona metro area has more people than the Marseille metro (4.7m vs 1.6-1.8m).
No, I am not talking about China... my hometown has 1.6 million people, and very few outside the province (not even the country) would know about its name.
I am not talking about North America either, where a city with 1 million people on paper actually feels like a deserted village with a so-called downtown few people lives in with a couple of retail streets among a massive sea of 2 story homes.
I am talking Europe. Spain, Germany and Italy and even the UK has several cities that are larger than Lyon/Marseilles.
In Italy there are maybe 3 cities that are bigger than Lyon and Marseille... Naples, Milan and Rome are Bigger. Turin and Palermo are roughly the same. I live in Bologna and it's very similar to Toulouse, population-wise. I find it odd that some people continue to perpetuate the myth that France only has one large city and that you have to go to other countries to find several large cities in a single country.

I guess because Paris makes a lot of shadow, even to lyon..
1. London 8,673,713 (the only megacity)
2. Berlin 3,670,622
3. Madrid 3,141,991
4. Rome 2,870,336
5. Paris 2,244,000
6. Bucharest 2,106,144
7. Vienna 1,867,960
8. Hamburg 1,787,408
9. Budapest 1,759,407
10. Warszaw 1,753,977
11. Barcelona 1,608,746

Besides in 2017, I think the metropolitan areas should be included they are almost impossible to separate from the city itself. When I'm checking the size of Glasgow, it's 2.8 million inhabitants, not 1/2 million... Well that's my opinion... qui n'engage que moi .
From the space it's clear :Bucharest and Paris from 90 km high:
1. London 8,673,713 (the only megacity)
2. Berlin 3,670,622
3. Madrid 3,141,991

etc. Cities, not metropolitan areas.
These numbers are utterly meaningless.
The city of London actually has about 7500 people.

Not to mention Barcelona is denser than almost all other European cities.

Essentially France put Rome, Milan and Naples all together (11M) to make one huge city, and then have the next tiered city the size of Turin (Lyon -2.3M).

Well metro areas are politically defined so it can be apples-to-oranges, but urban areas (e.g. Moderator cut: Link removed, linking to competitor sites is not allowed) are defined consistently and provide a pretty good ordering of the perceived size of a city, except when some cities are at the centre of a 'chain' of cities (Lille, Nice, Dusseldorf):
Moscow 16,710,000
Istanbul 13,755,000
Paris 10,950,000
London 10,470,000
Ruhr (Essen-Dusseldorf) 6,670,000
Madrid 6,310,000
Milan 5,280,000
St. Petersburg 5,155,000
Barcelona 4,790,000
Berlin 4,105,000
Rome 3,950,000
---
Lyon 1,650,000
Marseille 1,620,000
Lille 1,065,000
Nice 975,000
Toulouse 965,000
Bordeaux 960,000
Nantes 900,000
