Hi, my name is Luca. I am Italian but living and working in Puerto Rico. I will move to Amsterdam, NL, on August 15, with my husband and two dogs. My husband got a job as Professor and will earn 44k euros gross. I will earn 20k euros gross.
Considering our income, 2 dogs and no car, in which area should we look for a house to rent? We would need a garden for the dogs and close to public transportation. We know we'll probably have to live outside the city and it's not a problem. We just would like to avoid anonymous places: we need a place with a character.
I was considering Harleem, Edam, Volendam, Zaandam, Naardem, Hilversum. What do you think about? Should we consider other areas closer to the city? What about Utrecht? Would you live in Utrecht and work in Amsterdam? Would you suggest us other places? Which places should we avoid?
It's very hard to live in Utrecht and to work in Amsterdam without a car.
You will need a car, a small gasoline car with a 1.0 or 1.2 engine but you will need it.
64k gross for a family is a wage on the average, if it was 64k gross for a single person yes, but for 2... take account of the taxes, as probably you will be somewhere around 40k net per year, that means about 3.300€ net per month.
Bijlmermeer and Amsterdam-Zuidoost are amongst the cheapest places, and Amsterdam-Zuid is also cheaper than most of the city and it's closer to the centre.
In Zaandam you will find cheaper rentals in... Poelenburg. A place not very recommended to live if you aren't Turk or from the Middle East.

I don't know much about Almere, it's a very beautiful city maded in the entirety for a calmed, Dutch life. Much of the city are pretty recent houses which are not cheap. And you need to take a train every day in order to get to Amsterdam if you don't have a car, it takes from 40 min to 60 min to reach your destination in Amsterdam (depending on where you go). Besides Haarlem seems a better choice.
Thank you for the replies!! I'm not convinced by Almere. I mean, I've never been there, so my impression is based only on photos and Google Street View. It's like that Almere misses that soul I'm looking for in the place where to live.. While Haarlem looks fantastic! I just have troubles in finding houses to rent at 1,200 euros max.. That's why I was considering farther towns..
Thank you friends for the help! You are right: garden is a problem. The fact is that my two dogs are used to stay outdoor here in Puerto Rico. I know my puppies: if I close them inside a home, they will destroy it :-( They need time to get use to stay indoor. Luckly I will move to Amsterdam in summer! We don't need a big, green and enchanted garden, just an outdoor space... I found a house in Muiden. It looks nice, but train station in far. Do you know if bus connections are good between Amsterdam centre and Muiden?
