Hi! I am going to be going from Rome to Munich next month, and figuring out transportation. I am stuck between a bus or train, and I would love some insight from anyone who has the made the trip before by either mode. The bus would be cheaper, but Im not sure about the quality of the ride to a train ride. How different/similar are they?
There's a train from here in Bologna to Munich which takes about 5 hours, and it is a german train. You can do Rome-Bologna with Freccia Rossa or Italo in about 3 hours I guess. So that's a day trip.
Never took the bus for that ride, but the train is ok.
I definitely think I'll be taking the train. This will be my first time traveling by myself(going to Italy for a service group, leaving the group to meet a friend in munich) and flying seems like such a hassle and a train seems more easy to manage. Plus, the ride through the alps must be amazing, being from the midwest USA
I have a friend that often does Rome-Munich. The plane is much faster, less than 2 hours, and now it't also cheap. If you look for it soon you can find low prices, less than the train. But if you want to do a tour through the Italy then the train is better.
The problem with the plane is that you usually have to add 2 hours in advance to be at the airport and wait for the plane. Then you have to go to the airport to the city, which is not always next door.
If you buy ticket online in advance you may get substantial discounts on the Italian trains but discounted tickets cannot be changed or refunded.
