I'm considering another European solo trip in 2019 but I need ideas. I went to Italy Rome, Florence, Venice, Pisa, and Lucca. I really enjoyed Florence over Rome and Venice. I would love a cool location that is not too touristy but not completely off the beaten path if that makes sense. I am aware that tourist are everywhere but I just want more of an authentic experience. I'm not even looking to check off a check list of must see and do itineraries. I am more of a go with the flow type, don't need to plan every minute. I like to wander and find things of interest. I'd like some place walkable, not too overwhelming in terms of navigating. I enjoy art, history, architecture, museums, food, wine, nature, and friendly people. I'm not interested in renting cars to drive around from city to city. I like time to explore at a decent pace and be there long enough to soak it all in. Any ideas? Please and thanks in advance!!

When you liked those places in Italy, I would recommend Portugal or Spain for all the things you mentioned. Places in Spain like Seville, Madrid, Barcelona and then less crowded places all around the country. Granada, Bilbao, Valencia maybe. The train network is quite efficient and affordable.

I've always wanted to go to Transylvania.

Budapest is pretty nice but it's not exactly off the beaten path.

Was fortunate to experience Venice, Florence and Rome a few years ago, so amazing!
I heard Croatia is a cool place ... unless of course people have discovered it and it's getting swamped?

I'm kind of curious about Budapest! It doesn't have to be completely off the beaten path, just a little less touristy.
