Who knows what that guy did. Obviously something happened. He probably didnt pay the fair and then wouldnt get off the train.

Regarding reverse racists: Havent you guys learned? Do not screw with the Germans. Ok? Just leave them alone. They are nice people. You can visit their country, and have a good time, but they dont want immigrants and that is their right.
They pay very high taxes that pay for free college tuition and loads of other perks and they dont want a bunch of free loaders bogging down their system!

Regarding the fashion and fitness of Germans, most travelers come away from Germany with the impression that everyone is well put together because they tend to be there on business or as tourists and are only exposed to areas of the country and cities with a wealthy and urbane, sophisticated population.

I assure you that the standards drop in blue collar surroundings. That's not to say that people are utter slobs, but there is certainly obesity, especially among middle aged people, and jeans and t shirts are a uniform for many from youth well into men's 40s and 50s.

Comparing to Americans, I will say that in all levels of society that I have witnessed, people are a bit more conscious about dressing for the occasion. A German who is more comfortable in jeans and a t shirt is far more likely to put on a casual blazer when going out whereas in many parts of America, people push the boundaries of where they can wear very casual dress.

Berlin has the most fashionable people in Germany, very artsy and diverse. Not sure why you think they are poorly dressed? Maybe you do not recognize their try to be different and mistakenly judge it as poorly.
Those are a different crowd. Different cultures of people. A place can have both. Many very fashionable people and many perhaps poorly dressed. This might have also had something to do with poverty and different priorities. The cool people or whatever might even take inspiration from the the others but you can always tell the difference.

Standards always drop in blue collar areas. That's where "blue collar" comes from.

I haven't been all over Germany. But I've been in a few small towns and Munich and Heidelberg. In all the places I've been the people generally were better dressed than in comparable American places. Alsfeld vs. Cooperstown, Munich vs Cleveland, etc. (How they dress vs the rest of Europe I don't know.)

Blue jeans were worn by tourists and younger Germans almost exclusively. Tee shirts were always worn by tourists, as were sneakers.

Not that Germans are fashionable. But they are, the great majority, neatly dressed. Tourists were slobs by comparison, mostly.

I'm sure Berlin is different and perhaps places like Düsseldorf, etc., are too. I wouldn't know.

The places I've been to are also much cleaner than all but the highest class American cities. They are Beverly Hill clean. Chicago is 3rd world in comparison.

Both blue jeans and t-shirts are worn by lots of Germans of ANY age as well. Maybe you just thought the people you saw were tourists as many Germans look just like Brits or Americans.

Here in Portugal it is clearly different, blue jeans are not as common as the Portuguese have better taste when it comes to clothes.
