Let's say the taste for German food is either an acquired or inherited taste. My mother made some very good German dishes and some not so good. My wife continues to make the good ones. Tours in Germany have tour food, bland usually. Non-tour food is better and what I've had is pretty good. Not Italian good but not bad either.

Are you saying you think Italian food is better than German food?

Once I had a German girlrfriend who fand it disgusting the way I dipped my croissant in my coffe at breakfast, now that is typically French -and yummy albeit I admit it can look disgusting for the person sitting in front...

Okay, which German foods do you people find so horrible. The reason I ask is because aldi has opened grocery stores in U.S.; there is one in my town, that is about 20 miles from me. I haven't been yet, accept to fill out application for employment. Help me out. For the 'real' German experience, what foods do you suggest I purchase for recipes? I already know about the German pastries as I had a grandma (lived in northern U.S.) on my father's side, she knew how to cook. yum

As for as the coffee dunker, I was raised in the South (U.S.) ... you ain't got nothing on us. We've been known for taking our biscuits and slopping up the gravy. Of course, that may be just a southern country thing to do. Not sure ...

When I was a kid, I'd take my ginger snap cookies that were given to me after our meal and dunk them in my daddy's coffee. That made them taste better.

My favorite "real" German dish is warm blood-sausage with schupfnudeln and apple-sauce. The blood-sausage warmed in below-boiling water. The schupfnudeln gently fried in a pan. The apple-sauce cold.

Yes, blutwurst. Go for it. It is good stuff and worth the effort!
