I know.

I don't absolutely 'have' to go swimming in the water although it would be nice to be somewhere I could do that even for just 1 or 2 days.

I could potentially do another separate trip that involved swimming in November or December. I also went to Kauai/Oahu last month and spent a ton of time in the water. So it can wait if it comes down to it...

Yep....that's why I picked starting there. I feel I could get through the city quickly. It just seems like it has a really cool vibe and I'd like to just spend most of my time hanging out and chatting it up with people and just taking in the city...I am usually busy in cities with so much to see that I am running around and don't get to do that as much as I would like.

swinning in october could be do-able in Spain or in southern Italy, but I am the type of guy who feels hot in 21c water, so I would not know.

If not it's cool. At this point if I can't get in the water in Portugal (which that appears to be the case) that's ok--I can plan a separate Florida or Caribbean trip in November or December for that purpose.

Still following this thread for city suggestions to add in between Ireland and Portugal.......

two or three days in dublin is too long IMO but its not too long to spend in ireland or even the east coast of ireland

Try Istanbul even if it is not totally a European city. I am currently there then I move to Bulgaria and then to Romania. It will be something new you did not see before. It is important to visit places with different customs in Europe.

What about Valletta? Malta is only a 3 hour flight from the UK, is small enough to see lots of the Island rather than just Valletta. Valletta itself is a very small city full of historic buildings & is a UNESCO world heritage sight. Also October is still very warm here & you will be able to swim outside, even in the sea...

Amsterdam was never on my list for some reason...

...would you personally pick Amsterdam over Berlin? And if so, why?
