There has been considerable discussion in the media regarding maritime travel across the Arctic Ocean with the melting of the north polar ice cap. Russia's northern coastline controls approximately 180° of the Arctic circle with Canada, the U.S. (Alaska), Norway and Greenland controlling the rest. I was wondering if Denmark is poised to take advantage of the new maritime travel that will be opening up as Greenland's northern coast continues to melt, I am curious as to how much independence does Greenland have over Denmark, or does it embrace Denmark as part of its culture?

The ice north of Greenland is the last that will melt, so that is not actual now.

Greenland has home rule and will probably strive for independence at some point, but today is totally dependent on subsidies from Denmark. Historically the treatment of the Inuits of Greenland by the Danes wasn't much better than the North Americans' treatment of their natives, and Denmark isn't that popular these days.

All I've heard is that Greenland is discussing the future potential for mining income, as there are valuable resources below the ice, that are becoming accessible, gradually.

Danes should settle Greenland. They're dumb for not doing it.

No way because Russia's north coast is always frozen in from the white sea through the Bering Straight.

So Russia has like no more sea ice? Poor Polar Bears. Greenland has so few people and such a high suicide. I think gaining independence just make them more depressed. They should just stick with a modern country with a high standard of living.

But the fashion now is to become "independent" (even if one continues to live at the cost of the former ruler as one can see in parts of Africa). If they can have their cake and eat it, and the others are ready to pay for it (or else they are branded "nasty colonialists, racists, etc) why not try it ? if the others are dumb enough to accept that, more power to the separatists.

Russia's Sea ice only melts in Summer, it freezes back up in the winter. This is the current sea ice extent at the moment
