I believe that all the above mentioned things have a favorable influence on life spectancy .And we can see that the statistics in all of them include Japan and Spain in first places .For example Spain and japan are the 2 countries that have the largest fishing fleet in the World and consume more fish.

However I think the main reason is that medical care in Spain is scellent and is universal without cost and immediate attention in the emergency (in a post in this Forum on medical care in Spain I comment on an experience I had this week on this subject).-

Bull.

Good health and longevity begin long before professional medical care is needed, in fact the objective, among other things, is to avoid professional health care.

Therein lies the without cost, or low cost, part: air, soil, water, healthy food, moderate exercise, and good genes.

Professional health care is EXPENSIVE, regardless where point of payment along the chain is. But go ahead and delude yourself.

Again, all surveys quickly sound like somebody's propaganda.

Technically no, it's Spain and Switzerland, both 3rd, behind Japan.

Australia's life expectancy is also high, just a few months below Spain. I would have thought a low obesity rate would be important but ours is fairly high. The diet here is very varied, according to the very mixed cultural heritage. The smoking rate is low, perhaps that has some importance. We do have decent healthcare. I have three friends currently being treated for cancer and fortunately they do not have to consider the cost of the treatment. The only discussion they have had of costs is that of parking at the hospital, which can be subsidised but requires a bit of paperwork.
I have heard that the Japanese are believed to be long living as they retain a sense of purpose in the community as they age.
Seems to me that there are lots of factors at play here.

Life expectancy in Spain in the 70s was 10 years less than now, and inferior to many other European countries. However genetics, diet, weather, contamination, soil were equal or even better in the 70s than today.

I think lots of people underestimate medical improvements (especially with the youngest and elders). Just-born and infant mortality rate dropped considerably in Spain during these 40 years. Also car accidents for example dropped dramatically in Spain especially in the 90s and 2000s, contributing significally to life expectancy rates.

Another fact that hasn;t been addressed here but it is important, it is the social cohesion and strong family ties and structure in Spain, where elder people can find social networks of support in friends their age and family (children, grandchildren) that make them feel useful, not isolated, etc.

But still I think the two main factors have been health system improvements and car accidents drop.
