There also should be no discussion regarding the UK here because it has it's own forum and is not part of Europe.
Paris is not the financial capital of Europe. It is second in terms of GDP and employees in the financial sector but Paris is the economic powerhouse of Europe, then it’s London...
Frankfurt is nothing, just like a Parisian arrondissement.

And Paris has the most efficient economy in the world. Even if Productivity may sound like an abstract “economicky” concept, it is fundamentally the most important economic indicator to measure an efficient economy and Paris has the highest productivity in the world!

Yes, but their *children,* their offshoots are not as successful and powerful as Britain's offshoots. Not only that - I believe that underlying interests of the US for example don't have best European interests at heart. And THAT's WHY the loyalty of Britain is questioned lately by *European powers.*

In terms of geopolitics, Britain's interest in continental Europe can be summarized-that no single power dominate continental Europe, and therefore threaten Britain.

In regards to continental Europe, the USA has similar interests-that no power come to dominate continental Europe, and thereby become a threat to the U.S.

I don't see any reason why any European power could, would or want to become a threat to the US.

... If you exclude Russia, of course.

The European powers can see the NSA as a threat, but the US, never, and vice versa. We've been in the same boat for so long that the threats are completely somewhere else.

My top five would be

1.London (just too big and globally important to ignore,EU or no EU)
2.Frankfurt (as long as it's the financial centre of Germany,Frankfurt HAS to be in this)
3.Paris (see London above,as well as being near heart of the EU)
4.Moscow (Moscow and Russia have always,ALWAYS,affected a massive influence and sway on European affairs)
5.Istanbul(Constantinople,Byzantium,The capital of the Roman Empire in the east, this city is deffo European!)

Big shout outs for Milan,Berlin,Vienna,Madrid,Rome ect... I don't include the Randstad or the Ruhr because as has been said they are regions ,and where do you draw the line here ?

EU or no EU London will still be a global powerhouse.

If a continent has 5 powerhouses, it doesn't have a powerhouse.

Berlin arguably isn't even the top powerhouse within Germany.

I'm not sure I'd describe any individual German city as a powerhouse, their wealth and population seems to be spread among several large cities, rather than being disproportionately concentrated in a large powerhouse like London or Paris.

If it's by country, the top five of Europe would be (in alphabetical order) - France, Germany, Italy, Russia, UK.
