@ JL : the problem is not that simple, take me, I have a bladder problem, and as soon as I drink something, I'm hard pressed to urinate : if I don't find a toilet in the surrounding, well...I always manage to do it on some greenery , bush, or best of all, unplanted earth, unfortunately most of the "pigs" in Paris do it (on purpose) against walls, that's why in places that city stinks awfully. (that, and of course the legendary dog's crap, fortunately now that fines are enforced, you see less of them).

I hear ya. After living in Asia before my family emigrated to the U.S, i actually saw alot of this. Now, after living in the States, you don't see that ocurring often unless i'm at a club...lol.. , so it is kinda strange. I do change my mindset when i travel. I always tell myself to expect the unexpected, expect to see something i'm not used to seeing, etc. In any event, i will travel to Europe sometime next year and my father really enjoyed his time in Paris despite worrying about landmines...lol.
I found Paris pleasant, but it bothered me to have to watch out for dog feces everywhere I walked. Parisians love their dogs, that is for sure, there are so many. So, it is clean, except the sidewalks. I see the city does take a lot of effort to scrub the sidewalks each day, but they could do a lot less if they adopted poop and scoop rules and just scrubbed the sidewalks streets a couple of times a week.
Also, just think of the bacteria flowing down to the river via the storm sewers.

I remember a time (20-30 years ago and backwards) when it was impossible to go down in the street before stepping on a "landmine", it was a national sport for dog owners to make them poop on purpose on the sidewalks, and it was quite funny to see people -instead of scooping them or pushing them with the foot in the gutter like I usually do- avoiding them and walking around them ceremoniously like some kind of ....treasure
Just came back from Paris. The tourist spots are clean, BUT where my hotel was around the Opera ... dismal, wayyy to much grime. The worst is the metro which is disastrous compare to the London underground. London wins this one guys, London is a CLEAN city indeed , especially public transport! The stations in Paris are rugged and need desperate work, unlike St Pancras which is beautiful!
Auber RER station is not very glamourous, either. Neither is the La Defense -- Grande Arche RER station.
Very, very dirty. A veritable filthy crowded third-world socialist liberal ****hole. I would much rather be in a clean, non-claustrophobic, patriotic American city, such as Oklahoma City, Jacksonville, or Phoenix.

I was shocked by urine strains on the streets of Paris. For me Paris (esp. on the North) is very dirty. Even my native city - Moscow - is cleaner, despite 10-15 million population, which is much larger than Paris. I was shocked by lots of garbage, etc.
German cities are cleaner. Sorry, I am a Russian citizen and I haven't been in the USA or UK yet, only in Germany, Austria and France. So, I can't compare Paris with New York. But for me Paris is quite a dirty city. Its' undeground system is not very good also.
Maybe, I am wrong, I do not know, maybe as a Russian I do not have much worldwide expierence, I've been only in Germany and Austria before, but I am a little bit shocked.
