Amsterdam is drugged out and crime-ridden. Copenhagen: been there, done that, couldn't afford the tee-shirt. My vote is Munich

I have so many favorite European cities; but:

Utrecht, Holland
Cologne, Germany
Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany
Munich, Germany
Prague, Czech Republic

come immediately to mind.

Prague, Czech Republic (CZ)
Budapest, Hungary (H)
Duesseldorf, Germany (D)
Munich, Germany (D)
Zürich, Switzerland (CH)
Vienna, Austria (A)
Bilbao, Spain (E)

The letters in red are the abbreviations on their "Nationality" stickers seen on the back car window or in print. The abbreviation is for what the citizens of each country call themselves in their own language.

I know it has been said before, and that this thread is old, but 'best' how?

Surely the only 'best' thing is that all of these fascinating cities exist in such a comparatively small space.

If my 'best' is urban beauty, architectural unity and a certain gentility, I'm going to say Florence, Venice, Sienna, Bath, Cambridge, Prague, Edinburgh (etc) But to others these places might seem small, or touristed out. I know a few people who find the architecture of previous centuries boring and prefer the clean, modern lines of say Rotterdam or Helsinki.

If a stunning setting is how I measure the quality of a city, then Stockholm, Reykjavik or perhaps Geneva. Yet you hear complaints about all three, especially that Geneva shuts down by 2200, and the other two are a rip off prices-wise.

If sheer size, variation and oceans of art, culture, shopping and the ability to find and do almost anything are 'best' for me, only London and Paris really wear that crown. Yet some find them chaotic, too big, too dominating, too unfriendly/arrogant.

Berlin: jumping with excellent nightlife. To some: architecturally ugly.

Let's take Munich. Munich is a fantastic city in so many ways. One of my favourite places in Europe. But you know the best thing about Munich? It's not too far from Paris, London, Prague, Berlin, Venice, Amsterdam etc. etc. etc.

Europe doesn't have a best city. It just has a long, long list of incredible ones.
