Ummm... if you want a third world city, go to Detroit. Rome is far from one.

Paris and Rome both have positive aspects. Someone who prefers a larger commercial scene would prefer Paris, someone who likes to be surrounded by history would prefer Rome.

If a friend could only visit one, I'd recommend Rome....But I prefer Paris.
I've been to both and I daydream about going back to Paris. But not Rome. I feel like "I've been there, done that."

They're both wonderful, but very different.
I have no real preference, but am making plans to hit Paris one more time before I move back to the States.
I love museums and Paris meets that need for me. I've probably been there 4 times for a week or more.
I've been to numerous museums in Rome, as well. Some of my favorite rooms are the Raphael Rooms at the Vatican museum.

If you don't like grey skies and wet/cool-to-cold weather, only choose Paris if you plan to travel between june and early october. My 2 euros!

I travel off-season for two reasons, I don't like crowds and museums know no weather.
I travel somewhere in France almost every month, usually to the eastern part.

@ chielgirl : that's what I said : if someone doesn't care for museums and dull weather, he can skip Paris.
